Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano looked good in a single-A level rehab start last night for the Peoria Chiefs, pitching five shut-out innings. Said Big Z on his 74-pitch outing: "I felt good...My slider was a little flat, but I have to settle back, do my rehab, work on my pitches and have some fun and get ready for my start on Tuesday." Z even had a clever response to the Sun-Times' Carol Slezak, who took Zambrano to task this week after the pitcher admitted to being lazy. From ESPNChicago:
Don't worry about that mysterious disappearance of White Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon. While his exact whereabouts still aren't public knowledge but according to the team, he will make his scheduled rehab start in Charlotte tonight. But perhaps the best part of this is not the "where" or the "when" but rather the "why" he was hard to locate. Ozzie Guillen has his own theory [per the Tribune]:
Rehab is not only the best party going down each and every Monday, it's also arguably the strongest weekly residency in the Chicago with it's appeal across multiple genres and everyone's welcome attitudes. We became fans of their evening at evilOlive partially because it didn't feel like a typical club night. Sure, there were throngs of dances, but there was always room to chat with friends or duck away fro a game of pool if you weren't feeling a particular DJ's set.
Rehab, the little Monday night dance party that could, turns one-year-old tonight at evilOlive. Derek Berry's baby pulls in an amazingly motley mix of attendees, all of whom merely seem hell-bent on having fun and extending the weekend out just one more day longer. Tonight's DJs are headed by heavy hitters Matt Roan and million $ Mano so expect to call in late to work tomorrow .... if you make it in at all. RSVP for free entry to tonight's party and as an added bonus enjoy some complimentary Red Stripe from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Hey, just a quick note to folks who might be suffering from the same syndrome of restrictive pocketbookitis a.k.a. anorexic wallet that we are. Tonight's edition of Rehab at evilOlive features free Sparks (with RSVP) from 9 until 10. That, plus guesting female DJ-duo Rocktapussy, makes for a compelling reason to get out and shake it on the town tonight.
Sloan played Double Door last Monday and we were lucky enough to catch them rip through a blistering set in top form. After the show we headed down the street to check out Rehab at evilOlive and had a surprisingly good time. We recommend checking it out sometime.
We recently told you that palindrome proficient club evilOlive is the Monday night hot spot. Hipsters flock there (maybe because it’s so ironic to get loaded on a Monday?) to knock back PBRs and get down to the indie-rock dance party during the club’s weekly Rehab program.
Sure, you may be hungry like the wolf for the Duran Duran show tonight (get it? Hungry like the wolf? Duran Duran? No? Nothing?), but the big show we're excited about this weekend is taking place at The Metro Saturday night. Hip-hop legends The Wu-Tang Clan hit the stage in support of their new record, The 8 Diagrams, their first record since 2001's Iron Flag and since the 2004 death of ubiquitous member Ol' Dirty Bastard (RIP).
Our pal Gena was at the John C. Reilly/Dewey Cox thing yesterday (where she took the picture above and a hundred others), and she tells us Reilly-as-Cox was amazing, "never breaking character and ad libbing with the best of them, sweating like a rock star and gyrating like one, too." He also busted out a cover of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab," which we want to hear so very badly. She adds, "The band was remarkably...
Looking forward The Chicago Chamber Musicians are giving it away today and all first Mondays through August 2008 at the Chicago Cultural Center, a series of monthly free concerts kicking off with Eric Ewazen's Trio in E-Flat and Alexander Arutunian's Trumpet Concerto in A-Flat Major. Caro d’Offay Gallery invites contributions from aspiring and established sculptors for Colorist Chess, an interactive exhibition linking imaginative writing and creative imagery. Artists — established, aspiring, and otherwise — are...
Hell may freeze over yet. After all of daddy John’s efforts to demolish old Cook County General Hospital, Todd Stroger’s leading the charge to renovate the beast. The Toddler plans to make it an agenda at next week’s County Board meeting. Preservation and renovation carry a price tag of roughly $140 million. For now, the plan is to turn the 93-year-old structure into medical office space, libraries, a day-care center and, if there’s any space...
While our White Sox managed to tie the KC Royals in the AL Central basement earlier this week, the Cubs are quickly closing in on the other end of the standings. Ted Lilly had another strong outing for the Cubs, who beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night. With the win -- combined with the Milwaukee Brewers' loss -- moved the Cubs to within just two games of first in the NL Central. The...

Chicagoist remembers writing nearly the same post about a year ago — sadly it looks like once again the Cubs will open the season without Kerry Wood. The oft-injured pitcher landed on the disabled list on Monday, meaning that once again he will not break camp with the Cubs. Wood begins the season where he ended last year, with a torn rotator cuff. Opting against surgery, Wood hoped off-season rehab, losing 30 pounds and making...
Happy President's Day weekend! Take a load off and enjoy our usual madness: Three women were murdered in West Rogers Park following a domestic dispute. Karmin and Karolin Khooshabeh, stepsisters, were found bludgeoned to death with a hammer Saturday morning at 6459 N. Washtenaw. Karolin's 60-year-old mother also fell to the killer when she opened the door of her apartment at 2635 W. Arthur. The suspect in custody is Karmin's 56-year-old husband, who was found...
Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network wanted to express would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate. SFist saw their beloved mayor enter rehab, and they loved the...
Although it's pretty much a given that Daley will coast to re-election at the end of next month, by no means does it mean that his time is office has been an unmitigated success. In a report card scheduled to be issued today by a coalition of interest groups and local activists called "Developing Government Accountability to the People," Daley received low grades in many areas, including economic development, transportation, education, criminal justice and ethics....
We here at Chicagoist love good ideas. We’re so joyful when a simple idea benefits almost everyone, and even more joyful when that good idea benefits historic architecture.
Roger Ebert posted his first review today since he began recovery four months ago after undergoing surgery for salivary cancer. And we couldn’t be happier. Maybe that makes us “boosterish,” but we are. True to the honesty that’s been a hallmark of his reviews for the past 40 years, Ebert posted a lengthy description of his recent illness and rehabilitation. He notes that he doesn’t remember much more than “fragmentary episodes” from July and August...
Chicagoist grew up in a “wooded area” where birds crashing into giant glass windows was a regular occurrence. Unfortunately, for most of these birds, the blow would often mark the end of their little worm-eatin’ lives. But in the city, the future of crash-and-burn birds is looking a little better, as many can now receive a second chance on life at the bird hospital in the old Meigs Field terminal on Northerly Island.
Chicagoist has a dark sense of humor. And, we’ve got a hardcore caffeine habit. Lucky for us, the two now come in a controversial 8.4-ounce can. Las Vegas-based Redux Beverages recently rolled out their marketing campaign for the new energy drink Cocaine. It compares in calories to Red Bull (only 70 vs. Red Bull’s 80) but weighs in with 350 percent more caffeine (280 mg, about the same as four espresso shots). The drink also boasts an instant rush with no crash.
While things are turning around on the South Side, things seem to be coming full circle for the Cubs. It looks like the Cubs are going to finish their 2006 campaign just like they started it, with both Kerry Wood and Mark Prior on the disabled list. It was only two weeks ago that Kerry Wood, already on the DL, decided against surgery -- choosing rehab and a likely move to the bullpen for next...
After last week's successful rehab start for the Iowa Cubs, we predicted Cubs pitcher Mark Prior would be returning to the Cubs rotation very soon. In fact, the Cubs did activate him over the weekend, and Prior made his season debut Sunday. After that outting, he may have wished he'd stayed in the minors a bit longer. In his first start of the season, Prior lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up 8 runs. He...
Will Cubs fans soon see Mark Prior back on the mound at Wrigley Field? Could it actually be true? Prior's return to the Cubs roster seems to be near following last night's rehab start with the AAA Iowa Cubs. Prior threw 90 pitches in his 6 2/3 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 unearned run while striking out 10. He certainly seems about ready. His fastball topped out in the 91-92 range, but he...
One of the ironies about living in Bridgeport is that, for a neighborhood with a significant amount of Italian Americans, there aren't a lot of choices for Italian dining in the neighborhood. Unless one weighs his case for variety by counting all the pizza joints and sandwich shops, for years our only options were Gio’s Café & Deli or Franco Ristorante. When Chicagoist made the move to Bridgeport seven years ago, there was a place at 31st and Wallace called Graziano’s. Graziano’s had candles on the tables and served chianti in carafes. Other than that, and a chicken vesuvio sandwich so oily it moved like a fish trying to get off a hook, it wasn’t a place we’d have recommended to visitors.
Throughout Spring Training, the discussions concerning our two baseball teams' pitching staffs took decidedly differing tones. While Sox fans relished a rotation that was likely the best in baseball with 5 pitchers capable of winning 15 games, Cubs fans worried themselves with the health of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood, and a rotation anchored by a rapidly fading legend. Things haven't gone exactly as most expected. Sure, the White Sox rotation has been extremely...
United States National Soccer Team Manager Bruce Arena plans to announce the 23 player roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup tonight at 5pm on ESPN's Sportscenter. Arena is announcing the squad 13 days before the official roster submission date, when the rosters for all 32 teams will be finalized. We feel there are 13 players who can rest easy today as their place on the roster is a sure thing (denoted in italics below)....
Because we just can’t get enough of the architectural beat this week, we bring you our third installment: Save the graystones!
