This Just In: Obama Did Drugs in High School

File this one under "Color Us Surprised": Obama was interested in girls, drank alcohol and experimented with drugs in high school.

2007_11_obama.jpgObama made a campaign stop at a study hall in Manchester New Hampshire yesterday and answered students' questions. Prior to meeting with the students, Obama unveiled an $18 billion plan that would expand public education from pre-school through 12th grade. He also criticized No Child Left Behind. To their credit, the high schoolers had thoughtful questions for the Junior Senator from Illinois, asking him about the war in Iraq and his plans for education funding. In fact, It wasn't until vice principal John Mailhut asked Obama about his youth that the non-revelation came out.

Of course, the media ate it up, with Lynn Sweet doing a piece for her "blog" entitled "Obama tells students drugs, booze in his past." Even that opportunist Rudy Giuliani got in on the media mayhem, telling Sweet "one of the things we need from our people running for office is not this pretense of perfection. The reality is all of us that run for public office...we’re all human beings. If we haven’t made mistakes, don’t vote for us". Obama's policy ideas aren't unique. Every candidate has Big Plans for America on the campaign trail. When the hot story that comes off the campaign trail isn't an education plan that focuses on more teachers and early childhood, but rather a "revelation" that is more than a decade old, the press does little to uplift the political discourse in presidential politics.

Perhaps O'bama shouldn't have quite, maybe he'd be more creative with a progressive vision.

not that I'm endorseing long term drug use

So, you guys don't care that Bush drank either than right??

I love your posts about how the media is distracted from the "real truths" of the campaign, and yet, you, an independent blogger with numerous opportunities to "set the record straight" never choose to take them.

The candidates AREN'T all alike, nor are their policy proposals.

Hey, why don't you, IDK, educate us?

Where's the dude who uses the pic of O'Bama with the cig in his mouth? That dude needs to post more as I like looking at that pic

p.s Huckey what's your point? Bush is still doing lines of the desk in the Oval Office, I'm sure his head is down on the desk right now snorting up a big fat white one

I'm pointing out the obvious. So many posters on here looooove to point out how bush used to drink a lot and how, well; "Bush is still doing lines of the desk in the Oval Office, I'm sure his head is down on the desk right now snorting up a big fat white one."
But then when sombebody we like or want to see succeed talks about their drug past; then we get the sarcastic headlines like "This just in; Obama did drugs in high school."
If its not a big deal that Obama did drugs, why would you try to add bush's drinking into a discussion constantly? seems hypocritical.

I'm pointing out the obvious. So many posters on here looooove to point out how bush used to drink a lot and how,

I've been on here since the beginning (I think) and I've never heard any references to Bush hittin' the hard stuff. Besides I'd rather have him boozin' it up than hittin' the Jesus Juice with other closeted family values republicans.

Huckle Buck, you mentioned Bush first from the get go

"I've been on here since the beginning (I think) and I've never heard any references to Bush hittin' the hard stuff..."
are you being sarcastic here?? (if not, see post #5 for a sarcastically prime example)
Regardless, its not that big of a deal. I just know if it was Hastert who said he used drugs in the past Kevin would have written a much more sensationlist headline and would have gone on to excoriate republicans and the pathetic leadership of Hastert. Since its Obama, well, then its just ok since...well... eeeeeveryboy does it.

The comment that Rudy Giuliani "..got in on the media mayhem" mischaracterizes what happened. Somebody asked Giuliani a question about it.

Giuliani responded briefly, as you can see above, in a fair and non-judgemental way.

I don't support Obama, but this drug use talk about his past has absolutely nothing to do with that lack of support. It seems that if people go after him because of it that would backfire and might make people more sympathetic toward him.

walk the walk Chicagoist:
What a deeply ironic post. There is the over-arching sarcastic mocking of the 'press', the shameless catchy headline, the Unnecessary Capitalization, and the sardonic cheap shot at the "press doing little".

Do something for your audience- raise the level. Apart from some interesting interviews, most of your headlines and entries at Chicagoist are just as fluffy as the 'press'. Push those electrons people- tell me something I don't know!

I thought giiliani's response was classy.

Erm,
Probably the reason it would be bigger news (in your hypothetical example) is that the Republican party is the big FAMILY VALUES, MORALS & JESUS party. When you cater to puritanical freaks and intolerance it's bigger news when you backslide.

your arguing a completely seperate point Navin

Navin Ive seen obama wrap himself up in religion on many occasions. He often talks about his adoption of christianity later in life. Obamas church is a little outside the mainstream but that isnt a story. Ive heard alot more about mitch the mormon than obamas afrocentric church beliefs.
Spook the reason obama lacks a progressive vision is he is a creation of the chicago/crook co. dem machine. Emil Jones is obamas mentor and trying to any thought out of JONES except how to get family on the state/county/city payroll and seperate taxpayers from there hard earned money just aint gonna happen.

You know what's interesting Fed Up Emil created O'Bama and he also created Ricky Hollywood Hendon. Emil is on a roll, maybe Hollywood O'Bama will clear the way down the road for a Hollywood Hendon Presidency, He'd be our first president to wear a red suite!

I though ricky was a west side playa. Ricky doesnt have anywhere near the verbal skills of obama and is more of a street hustler. I think Ricky should be thankful for what he has and hope the G doesnt look to hard at his ghost payrolling for the county while being an elceted offical.
