Happy Birthday, Mac

2008_02_mac_cheese.jpgDear Kraft Foods,

We just wanted to offer you congratulations on the momentous occasion of seeing instant macaroni and cheese turn 70. That's a long time to be on top of your game. We're slightly more than half your age and can't remember the last time we made mac and cheese directly out of the box. It's safe to say that we can't remember the last time we partook of the orange goblin mélange that is Kraft macaroni and cheese, since we've actually developed some above average kitchen skills since we left home.

Not that you're begging us to come back. Your sales of mac and cheese increased by fifty percent last year, largely on the strength of something called the "Easy Mac" cup, which is microwaveable (we don't own one of those, either). Keeping an eye on recent health concerns, you've also broadened your reach in an effort to be more health conscious, offering versions of yourself to consumers who want something besides imitation cheddar sauce.

Like Virginia Slims, you've come a long way, baby. You'll have no problem reaching the big 100, just don't expect any of our spawn to partake of you in the process. We may have outgrown you, but yours is a memory that may not keep us warm yet never leaves us cold.

Sincerely,

Chicagoist

i'm sensing some severe kraft prejudice in this article. granted, i get 90% of my RDA sodium intake from your boxes, but what else am i, one of the laziest denizens of the city, going to do for dinner? i can't argue with easy. (unless it's easy mac, which royally sucks.)

So, from the tone of the aside, I take it you frown upon microwave ownership? Umm, it's just a tool. I think the fresh vegetables I steam in my microwave are at least as healthy as any number of things that could be prepared atop your bourgeouis stove. You'll actually find microwaves in many of your top restaurant kitchens these days.

That said, I loves me some powdered cheese sauce.

Mmmmm... Kraft Dinner (as every good Canadian will always refer to instant mac & cheese), a comfort food from my childhood. I've made all sorts of baked macaroni & cheese recipes from wholesome, organic ingredients which taste way better. Sometimes, though, you need a Kraft Dinner fix. It's easy, cheap & yummy.

Last week I made a Martha Stewart recipe for mac and cheese.

Several kinds of gourmet cheeses, a roux, bread cubes...and a lot of time and mess and I've got to say that a box of Kraft would have been just as good if not better (but not the easy mac as Shannon says).
