February in Chicago: Cold

2008_2_11.winterwhite.jpgThe City's nipples have permanently shifted into cut-glass state, but there's more cold on the way, and the National Weather Center says there's a 100 percent chance of precipitation tonight. There's a chance of snow later this week, too, and if you've been wondering what the difference is between sleet and hail, wonder no more.

Seems like a lot of snow, yes? But according to our beloved Ask Tom, it's not quite record-breaking — as of Saturday, the official snow measure was 47.4 inches at Midway, which puts this year as the fifth-snowiest at this point. (Chicago's snowiest winter ever, 1978-79, had 79.2 inches by February 9.) [S-T, Ask Tom, National Weather Service]

When you said "The City's nipples" you made me think of a topless Mayor Daley. I get to punch you in the throat now.

i dont really care about the snow.. it's the freaking bitter COLD that I can't handle! Snow away, just warm the eff up!

Agreed, Rachelle. Because you know what's worse than shoveling snow? Shoveling snow when it's REALLY FUCKING COLD OUT.
