It seems a bit unfair to have weather this good while the East Coast is being pounded with a hurricane. Skilling Central reports we're in for a sunny, breezy day with a high of 78. It's not a good day to get your boat out, though. High winds and strong rip tides make it too dangerous. more ›

The days certainly do pass by in an instant, don't they? On this date in Lorraine Hansberry, author of the epic play A Raisin in the Sun, the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway, was born on this date. She would only live to be 34. As far as the weather is concerned. it's still cloudy outside, but we're gonna see a bit of a warming trend starting today with a projected high of 68 degrees. more ›

Your Morning Wake-Up Call for May 17, 2011

Good Morning, everyone. With all the discussion about the troubles the Field Museum is facing these days, we feel the need to point out that one of its most popular attractions, Sue the T-Rex, was introduced to the public 11 years ago today. The weather is slowly but surely making a course correction, but we're going to have to deal with more gusty wind and a chance of rain in order to get to some better weather. Expect a high of 56 today. more ›

Wednesday Afternoon Diversion: Play Ball!

Wednesday Afternoon Diversion: Play Ball!

With the sudden emergence of mid-summer in Chicago this week, we take another look back at some classic Chicago television, to a Cubs game that aired on WGN on Friday, April 25th 1980. The segment, called "Faces of Wrigley", ran during the seventh inning of a Cubs Pirates game (the Cubs eventually beat Pittsburgh, 5-3). Seeing everyone wrapped up in their spring coats reminds us of a classic saying about Chicago weather: if you don't like it, wait a minute. more ›

Good Morning, everyone, on the 117th anniversary of the incorporation of the village of Bensenville. If you're out in the south suburbs, the forecast calls for shirtless weather today with hazy skies and a projected high of 84 degrees from Skilling Central. (Keep your shirts on, though.) Your Morning Wake-Up Call for May 9, 2011

Good Morning, everyone. We sincerely hope all the mothers out there received their proper respects yesterday. On this date 25 years ago, Council Wars effectively came to an end when Mayor Harold Washington gained enough support to finally make key appointments. We mention this because it's Mayor Richard Daley's final week in office, which will become another historic occasion. Ald. Ed Burke noted last week that it's rare for a Chicago Mayor to leave the office of his own volition. Daley will be the first to do so since Ed Kelly in 1947. more ›

April Showers Bring May Flowers, Break Rainfall Record

April Showers Bring May Flowers, Break Rainfall Record

We all know it's been a really obnoxiously, depressingly rainy month. But it also broke the Illinois record for the rainiest April, previously set in 1957 at 7.13 inches. Average state rainfall this April was 7.45 inches, nearly twice the typical average of 3.83. more ›
