Esquire Magazine's "Best Sandwiches in America" article is a must-read, if only for us because it gives us a checklist of places to hunt down the next time we're on vacation (btw, Katz's pastrami on rye is really all that). Although we have to question the inclusion of the McRib sandwich, we have no qualms with seeing Chick-Fil-A make an appearance on the list.
Two Chicago staples made the cut. Food lovers across the city should have no arguments about Borinquen's Jibarito (a previous "One Great Sandwich" selection). Here's where we can agree to disagree. Esquire named the Italian beef at Al's as a must-eat. Now, we know Al's is a destination for out-of-towners and some locals, but we've eaten better Italian beef sandwiches. So debate among yourselves in the comments and leave your recommendations, please.

I will never apologize for loving whatever the hell makes up a McRib. NEVER!
Then tap into your inner Tony Joe White and CHOMP!, Ryan.
Al's is a solid entry-level beef for the out of towners. I don't have a problem with such a localized favorite being on there.
I think the hard part wouldn't be getting them to Mr. Beef or Portillo's, it'd be instructing newbies on the proper way to order.
Make mine a "Cheef, Dipped Sweet" please.
there's really not much more that can be said about Chicago Italian beef after Skillet Doux's exhaustive research:

I wish I knew how to set it up, I would totally set up an Italian Beef bracket similar to http://burritobracket.blogspot.com/
Please, Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood Park is where it's at. I've had Al's beef and was dissapointed.
