St. Patrick's Day Scheduling

2008_2_22.shamrock.jpgThe South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day parade will be held a week earlier than usual this year. Typically, the parade is held the Sunday before March 17, but this year, that's Palm Sunday, a major day on the Catholic calendar. So parade organizers moved the festivities up to March 9 to avoid any conflicts. We're not sure how much local St. Patrick's revelry will actually be affected by the Catholic calendar, since the ways we usually see people celebrate are definitely not Church-sanctioned.

The downtown parade is still on for the Saturday, March 15, with the traditional river-dyeing happening the same day.

Oh, and we hear the Shamrock Shake is back at McDonald's.

even if it wasn't Palm Sunday they'd still move it back a week. why have one weekend for St. Patrick's day when you can extend it into 2? what really needs to happen is that the downtown parade should actually happen on St. Patrick's day.

having the downtown parade during the workweek is not a good idea for a number of reasons. it used to be on st. patricks day but they changed it

When did the Catholic church get to be so uptight? When I was in school in the '70s, we used to get 'special dispensation' from the Bishop or the Cardinal (or whoever does that sort of thing) whenever St. Pat's fell on Good Friday, because they knew there was no way people were going to NOT eat corned beef and cabbage.

You probably got dispensation because it wasn't during Holy Week. This hasn't happened since the 1940s or something. Holy Week, among other things, is the week Jesus died. And St. Patrick's day is seldom a day of sorrow. There are to be no festivals, observations, or commemorations of anything other than that which Holy Week is there for: Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. If you look at religious calendars, specifically catholic ones, you'll see that March 17th has nothing on the day, while other days not in Holy Week observe the patron saints of anything.

St. Joseph's Day is moved as well. It's usually the 19th, but pushed up one week.

St. Joseph's Day is pushed back a week rather. What ever making it a week later means. Jesus.

Why was Jesus born on a fixed date, but died on a variable one?

Shamrock shake?! Shitshitshitshit. You just derailed me. I lost my winter fat and now you're making me want to gain it back. I hate that I love those things.

And...

McRibs (don't groan please). Thank God those two aren't around at the same time ever, otherwise it'd be GAME OVER for me.

Bekki,

Fairytales often have problems with little details.

Because Christmas rides coattails on a holiday that celebrated the birth of a Roman sun god on a fixed date based on the Julian calendar, and the date Easter is celebrated is based on the Jewish calendar.

Which of course all makes PERFECT sense, right, Kirk Cameron?

Hey, you leave Kirk Cameron alone. He's still figuring out bananas.

And, too, I don't think this is news, guys...I knew the parade was on March 9 for a couple of months now...

@ophmarketing:

Corned beef and cabbage is Jewish food. The only people in America that would let the Irish live near them at first were New York City jews, and it's hard to find a good ham joint at a Jewish deli, so they adopted their corned beef instead.

A good solid beef stew with soda bread is a better choice. You also get to avoid the built in pitfalls of stewing cabbage. My mom always made it smell like a sweat sock and it turned gray.

A shamrock shake, meanwhile, was custom built to be mixed with two shots of Jameson. Tell your kids!

shamrock shake and jameson? i could see how that works. i'm gonna give that a try. thanks

hummmmmm....I never wear green on that day, but I might also try the Shamrock and Jameson's!

@Spook:

Why no green? Are you racist against us Irish folk? Oh, you'll drink our whiskey...
