Heading downtown for the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival? You won't be alone: the Trib reports 800,000 are expected at the fest which has already kicked off and runs all day, climaxing with a parade this evening from 5:30 p.m. til 6:55 p.m. Of course, there are some reroutes and traffic issues to deal with if you're heading downtown for any reason. If you're taking the CTA, be sure to check in here for their bus reroutes and if you're driving, here's a list of road closures, courtesy of the Tribune.

Just a friendly reminder, Chicago's 40th Annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade kicks off at noon in Lakeview today. The parade is expected to draw nearly half a million spectators and participants.

Chinatown ushers in the lunar Year of the Ox, 4707, tomorrow, with the traditional parade that kicks off at 1 p.m. next Sunday. The parade travels down Wentworth between 24th Street and Cermack Road. Other events in Chinatown will begin at 11:30 a.m. The Chinatown Chamber has more information. The Year of the Ox officially begins on Monday.

Yesterday, hundreds lined the streets of Chinatown and Bridgeport for the 88th procession of the Order of St. Rocco di Simbario. The order, founded in the late 1920s by Bruno Bertucci, was named in honor of St. Rocco, the Catholic Patron Saint of Pestilence.

Maybe the best part of St. Patrick’s Day festivities is the reminder that warmer days are on their way, bringing with them festivals and parades. Today’s emerald green dyeing of Chicago River and the downtown Chicago Parade was chillier than it had been this week, but lower temperatures far from cooled the spirits of the crowd. We were on hand to snap a few photos of the day.

Who wouldn’t want to support an organization that raises money that helps sick kids? At least one South Side Catholic high school expressed concern that proceeds from the South Side Irish Parade will be going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which supports embryonic stem cell research in hopes of a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

The South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day parade will be held a week earlier than usual this year. Typically, the parade is held the Sunday before March 17, but this year, that's Palm Sunday, a major day on the Catholic calendar. So parade organizers moved the festivities up to March 9 to avoid any conflicts. We're not sure how much local St. Patrick's revelry will actually be affected by the Catholic calendar, since the ways we usually see people celebrate are definitely not Church-sanctioned.

While Thursday was the Chinese New Year, today was the annual Chinese New Year parade. With the temperature near zero and wind chill making it feel like 20-below, the crowd was very light. Nevertheless, the Year of the Rat, known by its formal name Wu Zi, year 4705, has begun. In ancient times, the rat was welcomed as a protector and bringer of material prosperity. According to Wikipedia, the rat is “associated with aggression, wealth, charm, and order, yet also associated with death, war, the occult, pestilence, and atrocities.”

Ah, dogs in costumes...has there ever been a more polarizing social oddity? You either love it or hate it, there's just no in between.
