The mercury has cracked 50 degrees on consecutive days this week and that's had us thinking about Spring around here. We know, it's supposed to get cold again next week, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's time to start planning our summer excursions. Sure, Lollapalooza and the Pitchfork Music Fest made big headlines recently, but Ravinia's 2008 schedule was also released this week, meaning we can start incorporating trips to Highland Park into our plans.
Just like last year, there are the old-timers, there are some acts we're actually intrigued to see, and there are some that just make us ask, "What the hell?" There are plenty of shows for our parents, including James Taylor's two night stand (June 6th and 7th), The Beach Boys (July 14th), Hootie & The Blowfish (July 25th), and Sheryl Crow (August 10th). Then there are the shows we might actually make an effort to attend. Funk/soul legends Isaac Hayes and Roberta Flack will play a show together (June 13th), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss continue their successful partnership (June 18th), Willie Nelson is always a good time (June 20th), and 2007 "it" girl Feist makes another Chicago-area appearance (July 11th).
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra continues their summer residency at Ravinia, playing a whopping 17 shows this year. Fans of NPR's "Prairie Home Companion" will want to come out to see Garrison Keillor and the gang perform a national broadcast live (July 5th). And of course, what's a summer concert series without a few wildcards? Take the aforementioned highway to the danger zone with Kenny Loggins (June 15th) or if you're really dying to relive the nadir of late 90's pop music, travel back to 1999 in style with The Backstreet Boys (August 24th).
Tickets for the 2008 season go on sale via the Ravinia website, mail, and fax on April 17th, at the Ravinia Box Office on May 17th, and via phone on May 18th (847-266-5100).

Weekend Diversion: Night Of The Ponies

Feist sucks
Poi Dog, Hootie, Lyle Lovett, BoDeans, Tony Bennett, everything seems to be in order. I'll be reposting this comment in mid March of 2009 so stay tuned.
I see myself up early to score those Plant and Krauss tix. Raising Sand is just a beautiful record.
Feist sucks
Man,
Just get a pretty girl with supper precious voice some average songs with the whimsey turned up to 10 and it's like shooting indie rock kids in a barrel.
I'm down for Yacht Rock Loggins! Nothing says summer and fun like "Danger Zone!"
I'm gonna get me some Garrison!! Even if he is kind of a grump... I grew up on my Minnesota gramma's buttermilk biscuits, and you just can't ignore your heritage.
if all people know of leslie feist is her lame apple commercial (which is how most people learned of her i suspect) you should really hear some of her old stuff. her first album 'monarch' (from 1999?) is quite sweet and well written. plus she's got a brain, writes her own songs and actually plays an instrument. she's been around a long time, and i suggest giving her a little bit of a listen.
Feist "Let it Die" is a pretty great album. I acutally perfer that to her latest.
Like most songs apple selects fot its ipod commercials, "1234" was a solid song until it was played 500 times a day. "The Reminder" still holds up well as an album in my opinion, and I will certainly pay $15 to chill out on the lawn and get my drink on while she plays. If anything, it will be funny to watch how many people sing along with "1234" and then don't know a single word to any of her other songs.
Considering Robert Plant & Alison Krauss were announced as a top bill act for Bonaroo, I would say that's a pretty good get for Ravinia as well.
For what it's worth, "So Sorry," the first track off of The Reminder is fantastic and shows off Leslie's pipes. She's also an integral part of the excellent Broken Social Scene. Well worth $15 for the lawn seat.
whatever. she sucks now. that last video was embarassing. now my mom thinks that that is what me and my friends are like.
Your mom things you and your friends all dress in a blue sparkly halter-top and dance suggestively while a group of dancers dance ironically behind you?? Rough.
Um, Backstreet Boys are going to be there. $15 lawn tickets. I am in.

++POST OF THE WEEK++
The joke's on you for liking Feist.
i always think that JT is part of the backstreet boys, and then i'm bitterly disappointed to remember that he's not.
boo.
oh, that's justin timberlake. i actually think i WILL go to see the original JT, because i meant to all those years he came to poplar creek every year, and i just don't want to miss him one more time. i'm a sucker for sap, people.
I demand any mention of Ravinia on this website be accompanied by the YouTube video you guys posted last year:

* insert some pretentious reason why your band at Ravinia suck *
Matty - get the fuck over yourself, dude. Just because you're the only one that listens to what ever non-popular, super-duper indie, "don't worry you've never heard of them" bullshit band you jerk off to, flavor of the moment doesn't mean that some us can't have have a good time.
Feist? Hell yea I'll be there.
Man, Matty you're a douche.
