Uh, Mayor? It's "Ellen"

Ellen DeGeneres taped her talk show here yesterday, and Mayor Daley continued to make Chicagoans proud when -- despite her name in gigantic letters behind him -- he introduced her to the crowd as "Helen" DeGeneres. And Ellen didn't just let it slide:

"The city has a whole transportation system named after me. 'El.' 'Ellen,'" DeGeneres told the mayor before a seated audience of about 1,300 folks.
To make matters worse, her schlockmeister guest Robin Williams got in a dig as well:
"My name is Reuben here," [Williams] said upon joining her on stage.
The show featuring Daley's gaffe will air on Tuesday. [S-T]

Ellen Degeneres: Hello, and welcome to another edition of Ellen Degeneres's Superfans. I'm BEllen Degeneres, sittin' in for my brother Bill, who is still recovering from that dreadful heart attack. With me as always are the Superfans, Pat Arnold-

Pat Arnold: Hey Ellen

Ellen Degeneres: Mayor Daley

Carl Wollarski: Hey Helen

Ellen Degeneres: And Todd O'Conner-

Todd O'Conner: How are ya' Bob?

What a freaking simpleton.

Can't speak English.

Couldn't pass the bar.

Had the right father.

Now he's our mayor.

Hey, Ward Up...don't discount the value of being a simpleton who can't speak English and performs poorly in school, but who has the right father.

With those credentials, Daley could be president!

ophmarketing, I happen to be a Republican, but I actually agree with you.

ophmarketing,

I was thinking county board president or govenor but I guess commander in chief also applies

Also:

Reuben Williams showed up at L and L on Friday night. I have pics.

I'll go ahead and agree with slaphappy.

Jackass hole

It was planned, people.

Fake. That link leads to a void article.

who are you trying to earn "brownie" points for anyways ReverendSlappy?

The link works for me. And I'm not trying to earn "brownie points" for anybody.

Here's a relevant quote, though:

Apparently it wasn’t one of Daley’s famous blunders, as Chicago media—including me—reported over the weekend.

The mayor was in on the whole thing.

"He knows her name is Ellen," Jodi Kawada, the mayor's deputry press secretary, told me Monday. "He's been a fan of hers for a long time."

Ellen on Monday released this statement, according to her publicist: "I love that the Mayor calls me 'Helen.' It's a little running joke we have. Thank you Mayor Haley."

I'm no fan of Duh Mare. But when we start letting anger blind us to the facts, then we've got a serious problem.
