Midway #1 In Customer Satisfaction

2008_5_21.mdw.jpgMidway ranked number-one on customer satisfaction for midsize airports in a new survey from J.D. Power and Associates, who apparently took a break from giving awards to every car ever to compile this data. According to the survey, late-arrival rates were the highest since 1996, customers are less satisfied than ever, and fewer people are checking bags. Perhaps even fewer travelers will be checking bags now that American will be charging $15 to do so.

The big MDW scored well for its baggage-claim area (agreed), terminal facilities (sure, why not), and airport accessibility. We love flying out of Midway—it's so much cleaner and brighter than O'Hare, plus there's way less schlepping around and far fewer people. Astonishingly, La Guardia came in second for midsize airports, which calls into question the entire study; La Guardia is disgusting.

O'Hare can in 12th for large airports, scoring 3/5 in every category. [J.D. Power's press release, Trib, photo by WallyG]

Midway used to look like an old high school -- they've really done great things with that place.

great line.

I wish they would open a Potbellies in LAX

Potbellies is one of my favorite things about Midway. Well, that and the fact that you have a snowball's chance in hell of having your flight actually take off. But Potbellies is definitely up there.

I would rather it was an armpit that I only had to spend 15 minutes in than a clean and brightly lit shopping mall where I languish for hours.

That said Midway is a great airport. I've never had to take more than 45 minutes to get checked in and through security, even around holidays. I guess the real issue is with the airlines.

I haven't flow from MDW recently but am eagerly awaiting exercising my "expert traveler" status in the black diamond lane!

I forgot to mention that the rates for wifi at airports is ridiculous. Any airport offering free (or non-highway robbery) prices for wifi will shoot to the top of my list. Plus the $10 bucks you spend in the morning waiting for your flight doesn't get access at the airport were you are waiting for your connection.

I guess soon Wifi will be obsolete as all of the true road warriors have cellular data cards.

How can LaGuardia be on this list? That is like THE worst airport I've ever seen in a self-respecting city. Even the older terminal in Detroit is better, except it gets a pass because they're building a brand new one right now.

My only small complaint about Midway is that it's not as great if you're meeting someone there. No food or drink places outside of security (except for the one stand) and no good place to wait for people at the exit from security. Since there's only one exit from security, it gets pretty crowded there (thus the corral they've constructed)
