Jim Beam Supports Wrigley Field

2008_06_jim_beam_2.jpg
If there are two things that Cubs fans love, it's their ballpark and their booze. And since the vast majority of fans are opposed to the idea of changing Wrigley Field's name, Jim Beam is hoping its show of solidarity with fans will make them more open to changing their drink.

The Kentucky bourbon brand erected a billboard across from Wrigley imploring, "Save our Ballpark's Name." The website listed on the sign, www.saveourname.com, includes a petition demanding that Wrigley remain Wrigley forever. Additionally, Beam will be handing out t-shirts and other paraphernalia around Wrigleyville with the "Save Wrigley" theme all summer long. But didn't the Tribune Co. already say that the Wrigley name wasn't going anywhere? Guess that's the problem when big corporations try to go guerrilla.

Anyhow, while beer seems to have cemented its place as the quaff of choice inside the Friendly Confines, can Beam's billboard get Wrigleyville bar hoppers to trade their beer for bourbon ? Or, like the patron saint of Cub fandom Harry Caray, will they always be Bud men and women?

My guess is that 'light' beer won't be losing a foothold there (or sadly any U.S. sports haven) in our lifetime.

Ok, this is a bad one.
You have Bourbon spelled several different ways, 'been' is wrong- it should be 'be', and 'guess that the problem' should be 'that' with an 's' on the end!

And finally, do you really think it acceptable for a sox fan to be taking digs at cub fans ability to rally around the name of Wrigley Field??

Wow, that's really nice of Jim Beam to write a big enough check to the Tribune Corp. to buy the naming rights in perpetuity and name the stadium after a different company! Gosh!

I grew up close enough to Wrigley to hear the cheers (but not so close that my home got whizzed on by drunk suburbanites - thanks guys!), so I have a certain fondness for the traditional name. (and a certain aversion to weak corporate naming like "US Cellular Field" or shameful names line "Enron".) While it's nice that Jim Beam is giving some "moral" support and publicity, it just seems to bring up the fact that they aren't really putting any money where their mouth is.

(On a tangent - listen to the tapes of Sam Zell berating employees in meetings. It sounds to me like a scared man who got himself way, way in over his head in a business he really doesn't understand. Not good.)

Cubs fans love their booze and of course Sox fans like to sip on ice water with lemon wedges or maybe a nice glass of cold milk when they're watching games at the Cell

when Benjy has him some passive-aggressive Cub hate to get out they're, sometime it hard to spell word corecktlee

Cubs fans love their booze

By booze you mean mean Budlight, margaritas and 'tinis' with the sorority sisters before the Dave Matthews concert right?

Thanks for the copy edits, mepps -- the brain's not fully awake at 7am before my morning coffee. Fixed now...

I'm sure if the folks at William Wrigley Jr. mislead their shareholders and ran away with the money, the venerable north side ball park wouldn't have as traditional a name...wait-what?

Hey Benjy, thanks for posting the info on Jim Beam and The Stuff Inside movement. I work with the campaign and I wanted to personally think you for your support for getting the word out.

We just launched a Facebook app to help get more people involved in the movement. You can view the app here: http://apps.facebook.com/saveourname.

Anyway feel free to reach out to me at anytime if you want more information about this movement.
