We're gearing up for the stretch-run of Chicago's premier music fests, Pitchfork and Lollapalooza. But there are some pretty great shows still happening unrelated to those fests and lots of tickets going on sale or already available. It's too hot to mull it over any more, so here we go.
Eddie Vedder is coming to town sans Jam for a pair of late-August shows at the Auditorium Theatre. New Zealander Liam Finn opens. Tickets are kind of pricey, but from what we've seen of Vedder in recent years, including Pearl Jam's performance at Lollapalooza last year, it'll be well worth it.
Eddie Vedder w/ Liam Finn, August 21 and 22, 7:30 p.m., Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University, $60 - $75, Tickets on sale tomorrow (Fri. July 11) at 11 a.m. via Ticketmaster
So the Smashing Pumpkins are doing that anniversary tour and we've already shared our feelings about that. While major cities, including Chicago, will be announced soon, the only show officially on the books is in...Hammond, Indiana. Huh.
Smashing Pumpkins, August 9, The Venue in Hammond, Indiana, $83 (!!!), Tickets on sale tomorrow (Fri. July 11) at 11 a.m. via Ticketmaster
If you're more into bands that were formed after 1993, indie rockers Ra Ra Riot hit up Subterranean in September with Chicago's own Walter Meego supporting.
Ra Ra Riot w/ Walter Meego, September 11, Subterranean, 17+, $12 via TicketWeb
Speaking of indie faves, The Walkmen will be coming to Metro in support of their new LP, You & Me (out August 19). They'll be supported by Golem.
The Walkmen w/ Golem, September 12, Metro, 18+, $15 in advance, $17 at the door, Tickets on sale Saturday, July 12 at 12 p.m. via eTix
And if The Walkmen aren't your thing, maybe you can spend your September 12 at The Vic seeing the Tankboy-approved Dandy Warhols, touring in support of their new record ...Earth to the Dandy Warhols..., available now digitally and out in hold-in-your-hand format on August 19. Darker My Love and The Upside Down will open.
The Dandy Warhols w/ Darker My Love & Upside Down, September 12, The Vic, $23 via Ticketmaster

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

$83?!?!?! And for basically the two dudes that were in Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan? Are you kidding me Billy Corgan? The man has just completely lost it...
and, im sorry, did you say hammond, INDIANA???
mich - it's true. It's a (new?) venue in a Harrah's casino there. Other bands/performers playing there include: Bette Midler, Billy Idol, Monique, Stone Temple Pilots, and the immortal Lynard Skynard.
That lineup should speak for itself.
there's also this fest the weekend of july 18-20:

Oh man, the Pumpkins are playing Harrah's Casino gigs now? That is really sad. It's a long fall from the top I suppose.
Im not going all the way to Hammond for a show. Fans with no cars cant leave city.
oh wait, i just saw Monique in your list. HAHAHAHA
Hilarious. Hey Eddie and fuck face (I mean Billy) What about the working class people you always seem to pretend to champion.
If I go will Eddie whine that he could not afford bleacher seats let alone skybox seats when he was a kid?
FU both
Hey, the "Smashing Pumpkins" tickets are at least cheaper than Michael Bolton.
tix are so $$ for pumpkins because its a brand new venue, they are playing on the 2nd opening night for the new hyped up venue, and they are like $100 cheaper than some of the people playing there.
also, the venue is only 2500 capacity and its all standing room, general admission tickets.
Pumpkins standing room only? I'm going.
I heard a rumor that SP will be playing 2 venues in Chicago on Aug 30-31 for their real anniversary tour, and i was too chicken yesterday to ask Joe Shanahan of Metro if it was true when I served him at lunch.
sorry. this excitement is coming from someone who used to sleep in the alley of the Aragon, or the stairs in front of tower records, or in the parking lot of United Center, or in a van in the parking lot of the hot dog place in front of Metro just so i could be first in line with my friends.
looks like i'm the only one still excited so i'm going solo :(
Carapatrica
I hope you go and I hope you have a grand time.
Really
Hey Eddie, how about lowering your ticket prices so we can all still buy that whole flannel-and-work-boots act, mmmkay? After all, you're a millionaire who dumped your high school sweetheart for a swimsuit model. Besides, I can't fork over $75 for a show where a grown man plays the ukulele.
A little more Neil Young, a lot less Pete Townsend (that guy is a royal asshole).
Can we take a moment to discuss how much Ticketmaster SUCKS! Fans can't get tickets b/c all the scalpers buy them up. I tried to get Eddie Vedder tickets today...almost succeeded until I was booted off. 5 minutes after the sale ended tics were posted on Craislist for as much as $500! Is there any hope in getting ticketmaster or people to change their ways? This is everything Pearl Jam is against. It's so sad.
