After yesterday's tragic news of a murdered 9 year-old girl, this is not the way we wanted to start the morning. Jose Callabero, a 16 year-old Logan Square boy, was shot in the head and killed in his home (located in the 2700 block of North Fairfield Ave.) early Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred around 3:45 a.m. Police have not released any more information, though there are no suspects and no known motives at this time. Damn. [Trib, S-T]

Friday Afternoon Diversion

Are any Chicago new organizations going to report on or investigate what seems to be a very large all-out gang war in Chicago?
While it is tragic that teens are getting killed, these shootings are all happening in heavily gang-infested areas. But, from the papers, you may get the impression that people are picking off honor students on their way to class. Only later is it occasionally mentioned that the victim had gang connections.
It doesn't help that the CPD is tremendously understaffed. The media doesn't really seem to be digging on that story either...
Well I wonder what CPD Sup. Wiese would have been doing all yesterday had he not had to spend seven hours in our city council circus ring
I think the assumption that someone is involved with gangs just because they live in a certain area happens entirely too often in the media. I've seen too many instances where papers have to retract what they said earlier due to angry family members, schoolteachers, etc.
With that said, if someone is breaking into your house to shoot you in your head the odds are great that you're involved in something unsavory.
