Oak Lawn is gearing up for its local version of the annual National Night Out block party, but hold the beer and barbeque. In lieu of a typical neighborhood bash, this southwest suburb is opening up its police and fire stations and letting the public play with all their big-boy toys.
The party plan is to bring back attractions that have proved popular in the past, and some of this stuff sounds pretty badass. First off, they’ll be moving all of Oak Lawn’s prison inmates to Burbank for the night solely so the jail is free for tours. They’ll also be displaying police vehicles including a Harley Davidson and a Hummer they apparently scored in a drug bust. Oak Lawn’s K-9 unit will also be on hand, and reportedly one of the officers will pack on some protective gear and let the dogs attack him. Sweet! They’re also working on obtaining a trailer to light on fire so the local firefighters can demonstrate how they put out a blaze. Super sweet! Best of all, they’ll be flying in a DEA chopper and parking it behind the village hall, although no word yet on how to score a ride.
The Southtown Star points out that Cub Scouts will also be in attendance selling hot dogs, and it sounds like the popcorn is free. Best block party EVER. [Editor's Note: And for a good cause!]

Weekend Diversion: Night Of The Ponies

Hmmm, sounds like it would be a lot more fun if Beer and Barbeque were involved.
holy CRAP. giving the people what they want!
Poor Burbank.
But man, that does sound like a good ol' God-Bless-America-lookey-here-all-the-shit-we-got good time. I might just have to go to Oak Lawn willingly for once!
Hmmmm, National Night Out in Oak Lawn. My parents live there and, believe it or not, Oak Lawn does have some crime. As one example, the TCF bank on Pulaski has had robberies or (attempts) four times in the past year. And my folks' block has had burglaries.
In fact, I can picture my Dad trying for a ride in that DEA chopper.
