Unexplained Pigeon Deaths in Alton

"Dozens" of pigeons are dying in downstate Alton, IL, and some residents fear a nefarious character is poisoning the birds.

The evidence? Numerous sluggish pigeons resisting peoples' efforts to shoo them away as they stay put for hours before dying; others flopping about in death throes; pigeon corpses lying about city streets and sidewalks; and unexplainable, random deposits of hard corn kernels left throughout Downtown, raising concerns that they might be poisonous.

Gaaah! Pigeons are annoying and gross and everything, but that's terrifying. [Telegraph, AP]

from the great Tom Lehrer:

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try and hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

I have occasionally harbored desires to poison pigeons. They seem to be ignoring the agreement -- get out of the way of my footsteps and car -- more and more these days. If this continues....

Actually, this morning on the way to work I noticed two dead birds on the street on Adams right before Franklin and then again on Adams in front of the Sears Tower. I was wondering if something was up... They looked pretty unharmed except for the death.

Many birds are beginning to migrate this time of year. Chicago is close to a major bird flyway, and unfortunately, the bright lights of the city confuse some. They fly into windows of tall buildings, often fatally. Some folks from Field Museum regularly come by my building to pick up dead birds and record info on them. The gulls get others. In the past, Daley has ordered Loop buildings to dim their lights at night to help the little guys.

Monsanto is testing a new "Roundup Ready" variant of GMO corn.

Just my educated guess >:-)

@Nicholas: That still doesn't explain the deaths and strange behavior of so many pigeons in Alton.

unexplained pigeon deaths? no known cause? is there any chance the pigeons are rising from their apparent deaths? folks, what we may have here is the beginning of stage one and the impending zombification of the world. the disease will spread and become an epidemic. it will jump species. before long people will start to die and then their bodies will reanimate. prepare yourselves. you cannot hide. you must be ever vigilant and ready to fight! the end is nigh. the zombies are upon us.

I keep finding other birds weirdly dead everywhere too...

Finches, Sparrows, today was a blackbird.

Granted, I just got hit by a car on my bike and I'm all doped up on painkillers, but it freaks me out a little. Especially when I was in the mental health ward in high school and everytime my meds made me hallucinate, I saw weird shit like that.

I have problems.

I saw a pigeon matching this description at Montrose and Clark last night with corn kernels around it. Maybe the Alton Pigeon Killer has hit Chicago.

This is not a bit. It was seriously disturbing.

Does anyone here speak pigeonese? We need a translator! Someone that can speak with the pigeons, please!
