This week, we hopefully compare tasting notes. Two weeks back we wrote about a sampling of Moloko, a milk stout brewed by Three Floyds, that was happening at Smallbar in Wicker Park. Milk stouts are typically made with lactose sugar; the resultant brew is sticky sweet.
Moloko isn't your typical Three Floyds hop bomb. Actually, it's the complete opposite. Moloko is far and away the sweetest beer Three Floyds brews. Nick Floyd and company use lactose sugar and ample amounts of golden oats for added sweetness. We picked up notes of bitter chocolate and roasted barley malt, as well. Try as we might, we couldn't get any head to form from Moloko. We even gave this a long pour to facilitate some foam formation. But it's the sweetness that hooked us. The overall flavor and light carbonation reminded us of the flat cola Mom uses to de-glaze her pork chops.
We doubt that Smallbar has any Moloko left on draft. If you are interested in picking up a bomber bottle, Lush Wine and Spirits (who tipped us off to the Smallbar tasting) is selling them for $8.25. Moloko, Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week," also makes three stouts (to go with DarkLord and Black Sun) that Three Floyds brews well.

I stumbled upon this great Belgian stout (or porter--can't remember) that had yeast in it, just floating as if in suspended animation. I can't remember the name but it was good. Any ideas about similar beers?
FYI: I tried Allagash Belgian-style stout a while ago, and while it was good, it wasn't what I was looking for.
Anyway, this seems like a great beer, too.
it's cheaper at my liquor store!
Sweeter than Dark Lord? Really? Without the big alcohol and hops bite to at least somewhat balance the sweetness/stickiness?
I mean, a milk stout ought to have some residual sweetness but damn, I'm not looking for a beer to pour on my waffles in the morning.
Still, I'll try it.
matilda: may be de dolle special extra export stout, or de struise black albert. imho, both are really excellent stouts!
I wouldn't call it a beer to pour on your waffles in the morning (try Southern Tier Creme Brulee for that). It's really smooth and nicely balanced, way less aggressive than the usual 3 Floyds stuff. Good call for BotW!
Chuck,
Do you get free beer everytime you mention Lush Wine and Spirits?
I find their selection ok, but definitely at the high end of the price spectrum. Their close proximity to my usual store leaves them out of the running.
Great choice for the beer of the week. I picked up a couple bottles over the weekend. Went great with my german chocolate cake and the cool weather.
hotwater30: Whether you mentioned it in jest or not, allow me to clarify. Unless otherwise noted (the Farson's Shandy from a few weeks back comes to mind; I tasted it at a beer expo), I pay for every "BotW" selection out of pocket.
I also receive no special dispensation from Lush, aside from the heads up e-mails on what they're bringing in. Pricey? yeah. Close to home? Yes, and worth not having to travel as far.
It's like the guy in Idiocracy that gets money if he ends every setence with, "brought to you by Carl's Jr."..
It's also currently the firkin at In Fine Spirits in Andersonville, where I'm sure there's still some on tap. Just sayin'.
This sounds like something ideally suited for a hand pulled draft, so thanks for the heads up, JorgeSanchez. I'll have to check it out.
what's the alcohol contient, Chuck Diddy???
beeradvocate says 7.00% ABV:
