CTA Shooter Identified, Family Issues Plea To Turn Himself In

2008_10_08_CTAshooting.jpgThe man accused of shooting 17-year-old Kiyanna Salters onboard a CTA bus Sunday night has been identified by family members thanks to surveillance footage from the bus even as police had already identified the man. While media reports aren't naming the man since he has yet to be officially charged with anything, the reports identified his mother as Patricia Wilson. She told the Trib, "I want my son to turn himself in. I want him to be safe, and I don't want him to be hurt in the streets." She also directly addressed her son, telling him, "Please baby, do the right thing. I don't want anything, anything at all to happen to you."

screw this kid and his mother. this kid is all tough on the bus, flashing his gun because someone bumped into him. then he runs away, like a coward, shooting behind him, again like a coward. this kid deserves everything he has coming to him. maybe then some other dumbass gun-wielding kid might learn a lesson. what the hell is wrong with this city?

At least one person in this guy's family is a stand up person.

Side note: While the Chicagoist commenters do not agree there seems to be a (mostly) reasonable discussion that takes place here. The S-T and Trib comment boards are a hoot to read through. Racist, never-left-my-neighborhood comments are the norm. I guess the anonymity of the internet brings out people's true feelings.

The most important sentence in the Trib article:

"Wilson hoped her son, who is on probation for weapon and drug convictions, would appear at the church's door."

"screw this kid and his mother"

Rest assured aja, we will continue the screwing process, Actually of all modern industrial countries, America is the foremost expert in the above field particulary with kids from certain zip codes.

Salute!

Nice guy!

Shouldn't the other guy be charged with some sort of murder charge as well, since he also flashed a gun?

Apparently, it's cool to carry a gun, just check with the US supreme court (I know that this is not really what that recent decision means). But this country perpetuates violence on all fronts. Who is surprised by this?
Also, this kid's mother sounds like a total moron. If her son is already on probation for being a moron, why in the world would he turn himself in?

But this country perpetuates violence on all fronts.

Are you, even dimly, aware of how ridiculous you sound saying this after posting "screw this kid and his mother"?

Maybe these mindsets are connected?

Naaah.

Screw the "kid" (I think I heard he's in his 20s)? Sure. Screw the mom? Why? She's trying to do the right thing in telling the guy to turn himself in. And I'm pretty sure she didn't tell her son, "Maybe one day, when you get older, I'll show you how to shoot and kill random people." If she had came on the cameras and said, "Run, Pookie, Run!!!" you might have a point. Sure he might not (ok, most likely won't) turn himself in. But, damn, give her SOME credit for asking him to do so. She's getting nothing out of this deal except ridicule on internet message boards.

I don't give that woman credit for anything other than being a shitty parent. You know, she could have not said anything, or is that not an option?

and, Albanyparkour, I don't think I sound ridiculous, because i was not saying anything to support the fact that violence creates violence. I was saying that this kid doesn't deserve a break. Every time this happens, people are calling for these child murderers to be given a break, well, obviously that doesn't teach people anything.

Wilson hoped her son, who is on probation for weapon and drug convictions...

I'd like to hear more about the convictions that this guy was on probation for, if in fact he was the shooter.

Every time this happens, people are calling for these child murderers to be given a break, well, obviously that doesn't teach people anything.

Just, just look at that sentence. Take it in. Pure, unadulterated double-talk. It's like Kryptonite for logic.

No, you didn't advocate violence. You just showed a complete lack of empathy for a woman begging her son to turn himself in and spend the rest of his life in jail. You think, when you think, that that kind of callous behavior doesn't have an impact on society? Really? Because I envy your naiveté.

I like how the few- decreasing -voices in the American wilderness who call for a more committed Socratic honest, in-depth look at combating the growing pandemic of Black on Black youth Violence, get branded as "soft on crime".

Just remember, (not that I assume that most of you, including aja have some sort of historical reflections and perspective), that Black folks have always been the "canaries in the coalmines" of American social policy.

There before the grace of what ever God you worship goes the next community. Yea I'm saying with this current Depression coming, other communities besides the south side of Chicago will experience these killings. Of course then perhaps people will start to actually "notice"

Albany,

You're talking empathy here? For a punk who killed an innocent girl because another person accidentally bumped into him on a bus?

Where was this empathy you speak of in the Sliwinski case? Do you have a personal hierarchic chart you can share?

I don't give that woman credit for anything other than being a shitty parent. You know, she could have not said anything, or is that not an option?

And you know this, how? Again, not to protect her or defend her, but neither you nor I know how she raised her kid. There have been plenty of caring parents whose offspring still grew up to commit murder. HOw about basing this on what you know and not what you speculate?

If it was a choice between keeping her mouth shut and trying to get her son the (alleged) murderer of the street before he can hurt anyone else (he still has a gun, remember), I'll take the latter.

Do they sell that jacket at Roberto's?

Do they sell that jacket at Roberto's?

LOL. Murder Tip No. 1: If you think there's a chance you might shoot someone, try to wear something less flashy and easily identifiable.

Where was this empathy you speak of in the Sliwinski case? Do you have a personal hierarchic chart you can share?

Ingrid, the victims in this case were not musicians.

You're talking empathy here? For a punk who killed an innocent girl because another person accidentally bumped into him on a bus?

Never said that, read carefully.

This woman is doing the right thing, the hardest thing a parent can do. She's not out there with two Rev's talking about how this is all racism and evil cops and her son is a good kid, she's telling him to come in and face the music. That's a goddamn hard thing and I feel bad for her. Is she mom of the year? No, but she's doing the right thing now, something I don't think a lot of people could.

Where was this empathy you speak of in the Sliwinski case? Do you have a personal hierarchic chart you can share?

I don't have sympathy for murderers who work the system. Different case, different circumstances. Sliwinski might as well live on a different planet than these people.

"I don't have sympathy for murderers who work the system."

I don't know how a judge can sit and watch a defendant and their attorney(s) work the system. How judges can allow a defendant to plea to a lesser charge in exchange for a reduced sentence or fine. They know it's happening, all of us know it's happening. We have to start paying attention to these circuit court judges during election time, instead of just voting for the Irish ones.
Take a browse through the IDOC inmate search and look up some of their sentences. Laughable. 1/2 sentences for good behavior because they acted inside the way they are supposed to act out here.

If this had happened anywhere around the Taste, a commission would have been formed already.

I say kudos to the family for stepping forward, this is just like when the Unabombers brother turned him in.

yeah, exactly like the unabomber.

Already on probation for weapons and drug convictions. So this would be at least his third felony and he is in his early 20's. Wasn't it just last week Albany was complaining how poor minority kids get thrown in jail for ever while white people like the slwinski case get slaps on the wrist. Well Albany just like the piece of shit that recently killed a cop this piece of shit has at leat 2 previous convictions and is out running around with a gun killing people. It doesn't matter what you do in Crook Co. you are not going to prison for very long if at all.

"How judges can allow a defendant to plea to a lesser charge in exchange for a reduced sentence or fine. They know it's happening, all of us know it's happening."

Your beef would be with the *prosecutors* not the judge. It's the prosecutors who decide whether or not they are going to accept a plea bargain. Yes, the judge "approves" it, but on the recommendation of the *state*. In a criminal case, the "plaintiff" is the state, not the judge. The state brings the charges, the state can drop the charges or accept a plea-bargain.

Albany was complaining how poor minority kids get thrown in jail for ever while white people like the slwinski case get slaps on the wrist.

I love the law and order conservatives, you have no way of defending your thuggery save lying or twisting other people's words.

I was talking about non-violent drug offenders and petty crimes. Weapon charges? A history of violence? Far cry from kids getting swept up in military style raids.

I know it's hard to see the world as more than just binary, but there's a fair bit of difference between the extremis of vileness and the purity of the light.

so then what do you suggest the non-binary world do to prevent/punish this behaviour?

Prevention is the answer, period.

More cops, more jails, that's just staunching the bleeding. You need to treat the wound.

By the way, the HCZ is stunningly cost effective and preventing violent youth crime saves MILLIONS over incarcerating offenders. You want to be law and order and save money, get involved in education reform and social justice work.

I take my hat off to the few logical voices in this cyber room for having wherewithall to argue with a bunch of "regular american joes" at the corner bar with Monday night football mentalities.

You are arguing about a change in paradigm before it's too late for us all. They, on the other hand can't see past the
"lets form a Posse" mentality

Prevention is the best answer. The cost savings of teaching a child in school compared to imprisoning an adult is huge. That being said when some one commits a crime there needs to be a real sentence. Twice in the last two weeks offenders with multiple felony convictions that recieved a slap on the wrist have comitted high profile murders.

At least she's trying to get her son to do the right thing instead of making excuses for him which is worth volumes. If she were rich, this guy would have been driven to Canada then placed on the first overseas flight he could catch, and the CPD would be stonewalled by a barrage of lawyers and lawsuits when they attempt to find out where he went a la the Tombol Malik case.

well he turned himself in and then promptly blamed the other guy. I do have to give him credit for turning himself in I guess. Making excuses for your thug life behavior brings him right back down to asshole.

In all fairness, the clip they flashed everywhere doesn't show the actual altercation. The CTA sent the unabridged version to the police tonight, so we'll see how this pans out.

Prevention is the answer, period.

Nice way to state the obvious - tell me how else you would stop a crime like this from happening.

Self defense isn't a defense if you kill the wrong person. plus he exited the bus and fired back into the bus, so he was no longer in fear.
