Video of a violent brawl that resulted in the death of one teen was caught on tape and FOX 32 obtained the video caught on a cell phone camera. Four students were injured and 16-year-old Derrion Albert was killed in the brawl. Be warned, the footage is pretty graphic and harrowing. At about 48 seconds in, one student - no word if it's Albert - is beaten over the head with a two by four. Later in the video, Albert's body is seen but blurred out of the video by Fox, as others rush to his aid and carry his body out of the way.

the entire video is just...ugh. That's partly why we didn't embed it. View at your own risk. Seeing that kid get nailed with the 2x4...i assume the reason they released it is to help i.d. the kid who did it all. and i hope they catch him.
Kids being kids, not realizing the extent of their actions. The killer shot looks to be the 2x4 at about 1:16 in the video. Not trying to short change the murder, but even adults let group activity, mob mentality, get waaaay out of hand.

I dunno about this. You swing a 2x4 at someone head, you pretty intend to inflict some serious damage. Sure the line between causing death and serious injury may be then, but the guy swinging it probably wanted to hurt somebody real bad. He may not have known the possible extent of he was trying to get damn close from the looks of things.
The scariest part of that video was the voice in the background just going "Damn....damn.....damn.....damn" with no emotion. Kind of like he was watching
someone do some kind of impressive stunt.
How immune do you have to be to violence to have such a muted reaction to being front and center to watching someone get beaten to death with a two by four.
This is so sad and frightening at the same time.

Rival gang members have been fighting for a month -- and each time one of their fellow classmates is injured.
And clearly the cops have doubled their efforts...oh ha...ha ha ha ha. I'm sorry, I thought I was talking about one of the white or affluent neighborhoods in the city. These are some poor black kids. If they want to get noticed they better come on up to Wicker Park and roll some hipsters or walk around Lincoln Park looking "suspicious".
This city wrote off these kids Grandparents (hell, great grandparents) decades ago. Chicago is only interested in keeping certain areas clean and safe. Everyone else can burn.

A couple of interesting things about this video:
1. The guy getting hit at :47 took a swing at a guy right before he got hit. If this is the victim, it seems to contradict the media's report of this being an innocent bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time.
2. The guy getting hit at :47 has the same outfit (khaki's, black t-shirt) as a lot of other people. Given reports said this was a gang brawl, assuming this was the victim it seems if he wasn't in a gang he may well have had some connection to it. The people beating him had the rival outfit (red bottoms, black t-shirt) on as well.
Still, even if this guy was the biggest banger in Chicago it hardly justifies being beaten to death. I would encourage Chicagoist to post the video, if only to help in identifying those responsible.
Black shirts and khaki pants are the Fenger school uniform.
The simple truth is that many of Amrica's urban cities have resigned themselves to policies of containment for the black and latino poor. Civilization isn't a given. You can't blame cops, politicians, schools or whatever..culture is transmitted from the parent and networks of empowered adults..USUALLY..NOT ALWAYS..the white child picks up and has reinforced the norms and standards of socialization thru the proper channels..percentage wise, the black child does not. We are talking about sociology..painting with a broad brush..
