A CPS student was shot and killed yesterday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The student was identified as 17-year-old Gamaliel "Gama" Toscano, a 10th grader at Tilden High School. The shooting occurred in the 1100 block of West 47th St around 2:45 p.m. As of last night, no one was in custody in connection with the shooting. [CBS 2]

It sucks the kid got killed, but... a 17-year-old tenth grader?
that's really a midwest way of thinking. in all of the private schools out east where my kids went to school, the majority of students do a year of either pre-first or pre-kindergarten..which makes them 19 when they graduate from high school.
it's better for most kids...gives them a real leg up.
I grew up on the east coast.

By all reports, he was actually a good kid who stayed out of trouble and volunteered at an after-school program that helped kids have more alternatives than gangs.
He was on his way to the center when he was murdered.
