The Morning After: Cubs Salvage Series

By Marcus Gilmer in News on May 17, 2010 3:00PM

Cubs Edge Bucs
The Cubs finally got a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, rallying late for a 4-3 win, their first against the Pirates in 2010. Down 3-1 in the seventh, Mike Fontenot scored on a wild pitch and Derrek Lee knocked in an RBI to tie the game up. In the eighth, with two out and two on, pinch hitter Xavier Nady singled to right, driving home Alfonso Soriano for the game-winning run. Ted Lilly pitched a good seven innings, giving up three in the second but doing well otherwise, but it was Sean Marshall who got the win with Carlos Marmol securing the save. With another losing streak stopped, the Cubs hope to start a new winning streak tonight when they welcome the Colorado Rockies for a quick two-game series (7:05 p.m., CSN).

Sox Come Up Short Against Royals
The Sox got out to an early lead but it was the Royals rallying late to take a 5-3 victory in the rubber game of their three-game series. Alex Rios homered and Alexi Ramirez knocked in a run in the top of the second to give the Sox an early 2-0 lead. But the Royals roughed up starter Gavin Floyd (1-4) for three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to get ahead. Ramirez knocked in another run for the Sox in the seventh but that's all they could manage. The Sox hope to turn things around quickly this week, but it'll be hard as they travel to Detroit to face the Tigers in a quick two-game set (6:05 p.m., WCIU).
