The Sox dug themselves a ginormous first-inning hole but managed to slug their way out of it for a 12-6 win over the Royals. Down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the first, the Sox chipped away, scoring two runs in the first, third, and fourth innings powered by a pair of Paul Konerko two-run homers. Konerko provided the go-ahead run in the sixth but it was Andruw Jones who would put the game out of reach with a grand slam. Konerko, though, was the star, finishing the day with five RBI. After starter Lucas Harrell got rocked in the first inning, the Sox bullpen settled down and held the Royals scoreless, holding up their end. The Sox remain six games behind the Twins and have today off as they prepare for a three-game visit from Minnesota that will be their last shot at making a run at the division title, starting Tuesday night (7:10 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Sox take a step forward one night and then the next they take a step back. After picking up a game on the Twins on Friday, the Sox got routed by the Royals last night 8-2 and subsequently lost that game back to Minnesota. Edwin Jackson struggled on the hill for the Sox, giving up 13 hits and 6 runs to Kansas City while the Sox offense didn't produce much of anything in the way of offense, hitting only 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base. Said A.J. Pierzynski, "Just one of those things. It goes up and down, and we had eight hits tonight, scored a couple of runs. We had some chances, and we just didn't get it done." The Sox hope to bounce back and get it done in the series finale today before the Twins come calling - the Sox last chance to make a run at the division - later this week (1:05 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Sox did what they had to do and got a little help along the way, beating the Royals 4-3 and picking up a game on the Twins in the process. Down 3-1 in the eighth, Alex Rios got the rally started for the Sox with an RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2. And it was then A.J. Pierzynski who followed suit and won the game with a two-run double of his own. J.J. Putz, who pitched a scoreless eighth in relief, got the win while Chris Sale got the save. Mark Buehrle (7 IP, 3R, 7H, 4K) got a no-decision. But we're sure he'll gladly take it as the Sox got the win overall. And now? To win more. Pierzynski said: "Everyone knows what's going on. There's no secrets. Every single person in this clubhouse, every single person in this stadium, every single person in Major League Baseball knows what the situation is. We have to try to win every game. To come from behind in the eighth inning is a huge lift. It was a good team win -- and as big as everyone thought." They hope to get another big win and pick up more ground tonight when Edwin Jackson gets the start (6:10 p.m., WGN). more ›

It wasn't exactly the auspicious farewell that the team and fans wanted for Lou Piniella but it was the one they got as the Braves blew out the Cubs 16-5 at Wrigley yesterday, Lou's final game as manager of the Cubs. A Marlon Byrd single and an Aramis Ramirez homer actually helped give the Cubs an early lead but it collapsed as the Braves bats tagged starter Randy Wells for three runs in the fourth and later on the Cubs' bullpen, scoring 11 runs over the final three innings. The Cubs snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Braves at Wrigley on Saturday. Aramis Ramirex and Tyler Colvin each had two RBI in the winning effort. The team seemed to be cruising, up 5-1 late after Tom Gorzelanny allowed just one run over seven innings. But rookie Andrew Cashner continued to struggle, allowing three runs in the eighth and making the game closer than it needed to be. The Cubs try to salvage the series against the Braves this afternoon with Randy Wells taking the mound (1:20 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Cubs keep playing and keep finding new ways to lose. One strike away from a win, the Cubs wound up losers to the Braves 5-3, their fifth straight loss and eighth in ten games. Aramis Ramirez had helped the Cubs build the slim lead with a solo homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the sixth. Meanwhile, Ryan Dempster pitched eight strong innings, striking out seven and allowing two runs. But it all came undone in the ninth when Carlos Marmol walked the bases loaded and, one strike away from getting out of the jam and getting the W, gave up a bases-clearing triple to Rick Ankiel. A brilliant Cubs meltdown in a season full of them. Former Cub Derrek Lee went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his first game against the Cubs since being traded earlier this week. The Cubs try to snap their current losing streak this afternoon (3:10 p.m., FOX). more ›

A strong outing from Gavin Floyd helped propel the Sox to a 5-1 win over the Royals, their seventh straight victory. Floyd allowed one run over 7.2 innings, striking out four, to get the win. Carlos Quentin provided the offensive spark with two homers: a solo shot in the second to get the scoring started and a two-run shot that capped off a four-run fifth inning. Gordon Beckham also homered in the win. And one more bit of Sox news: Paul Konerko will be an All-Star after all, having been selected to replace the injured Justin Morneau at Tuesday's game in Anaheim. Youngster Dan Hudson will make his first start of the year for the Sox as they look for the series sweep (1:05 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Morning After: Sox Extend New Win Streak

The Morning After: Sox Extend New Win Streak

The White Sox have started another significant winning streak which is now at six straight after last night's 8-2 win over the Royals. The win helped the Sox keep paced with division-leading Detroit (just a half-game back) who is on a winning streak of their own (four games). A.J. Pierzynski hit a pair of homers and Andruw Jones had two RBI as well to push along the Sox offensive output. Mark Buehrle got his eighth win of the year, pushing him above .500 at 8-7, with seven innings of scoreless pitching. The Sox are 23-5 over their last 28 games and the success is echoed by the team. Said Buehrle, "We're starting to believe it. I think if we would have said we were going to win that quick and be back in it as quick as we did, I don't think anybody would have believed us. We just want to keep on going." The Sox hope to keep it going to seven straight when they take on the Royals again tonight (6:05 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Morning After: Cubs Still Can't Beat Pirates

There used to be a time - and what heady, glorious days those were - when the Pittsburgh Pirates were a welcome opponent for the Cubs, a chance for the team to recoup and catch a breather while beating up on a hapless franchise with an awful front office still clinging to the success of the early 90's. Those days are long gone. Last night, the Cubs' offense again sputtered to a halt in a 2-1 loss to the Pirates as the Cubs fell to 2-8 against the Bucs in 2010. Randy Wells pitched good enough to win, allowing just one run over six innings. Too bad the offense didn't hit well enough to help. A Starlin Castro RBI on a fielder's choice was the only run the Cubs could muster as they went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and the Pirates scored the winning run off of reliever Andrew Cashner who has now given up a run in three straight appearances. The Cubs try again tonight (7:05 p.m., WGN). more ›

A day after being shellacked 11-0 by the Kansas City Royals, the White Sox finally got a start out of there high-profile trade acquisition and exploded for 13 runs of their own to blow out the Royals 13-3. Jake Peavy, making his first start for the Sox and coming off a rehab stint, pitched good enough, giving up three runs over five innings. It wasn't a mind-blowing performance, but it was effective enough and White Sox fans can breath a sigh of relief. Meanwhile, the offense exploded for the Pale Hose, led by Carlos Quentin's fifth inning grand slam, which broke a 3-3 tie. The Sox exploded again in the eighth for six runs while the bullpen shut down the Royals offense. Said Peavy of his first performance in Sox black, "I did some things well, and I did some things not so well. I have a long way to go to be where I want to be...I'm used to having more arm strength and having a little more giddy-up. It will all come in time. I'm not so sure how it will come along this year, because I'm so far behind, but it felt good to get out there and compete." The teams close out the series today at 1:05 p.m. (CSN) before the Sox start a crucial six game, seven day stretch against the Twins and Tigers - believe it or not, the Sox are still in striking distance, 5.5 games back of the Tigers. more ›

There's not a whole lot Sox fans can take away from last night's 11-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Nothing, in fact. No bright spots. Even Ozzie seems to have finally thrown up his hands, saying after the loss, "My motivational speech before the game, it didn't work at all...I wasted 25 minutes of my time to try to motivate those guys." The White Sox offense only manged three hits off of Royals pitcher Luke Hochaver, who pitched a complete game. Meanwhile, all four Sox pitchers who saw action gave up at least one run. Starter Mark Buehrle gave up the most - five runs over six innings. The Sox remain 6.5 games out of first with 14 games left (meanwhile, the Twins have closed the gap to 3 games). The Sox try to muster...something in an attempt to make one last run at first starting tonight at 6:05 p.m. (WGN). more ›

Afternoon Box Score: Sox Edge Greinke, Royals

The Sox had little trouble with Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke today, tagging the youngster for four runs en route to a 4-2 series clinching victory over Kansas City this afternoon. Paul Konerko doubled in a run for the Pale Hose in the first for an early lead, but after that, all the runs would come on solo homers for both teams. For the Sox, Gordon Beckham (third inning), Carlos Quentin (fourth inning), and Alex Rios (seventh inning) all went deep; Kansas City got solo shots from David DeJesus (fourth) and Mark Teahan (eight). On the mound, the Sox got an excellent performance from Jose Contreras, who shook off a six game winless streak by throwing seven superb innings in which he allowed only three hits and one run (the DeJesus homer) and struck out eight. Thornton pitched an inning and a third for the hold and reliever Bobby Jenks notched his 26th save of the year by retiring the last two batters. The Sox, who are off tomorrow before a weekend series against Baltimore, are still just 2.5 games back of Detroit in the AL Central. more ›

Derek Lee solidified himself as the one Cubs offensive performer worthy of an invitation to the All-Star Game by homering twice and knocking in seven runs as the Cubs raced past the Brewers 9-5. Lee got things started with a three-run homer in the first and was followed up by Jake Fox who hit a solo shot. Mike Cameron hit a two-run shot for the Brewers in the second to cut the Cubs lead in half, but D-Lee responded with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth as the North Siders blew the game wide-open. Geovanny Soto completed the scoring-only-on-homers night for the Cubs as he belted a solo shot in the fourth as well. Of course, never ones to make things easy, the Cubs pitching staff allowed the Brewers to score runs late, but Lee's offense was enough to pace the team. Ryan Dempster had a good start, allowing four runs (three earned) over 6.2 innings while striking out nine. Aaron Heilman allowed a run in the eighth but the bullpen, which included appearances from Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol, held the Brewers. Don't look now, but the Cubs are only 2.5 out of first. The two teams tangle again this afternoon at 1:20 p.m. (CSN). more ›

Afternoon Box Score: Royals Edge Sox

Afternoon Box Score: Royals Edge Sox

It was a pitchers' duel at U.S. Cellular Field and even a switched up top-of-the-order for the Sox couldn't produce any runs as Kansas City wrapped up the season-opening series with a 2-1 win over the Pale Hose. John Danks was outstanding, scattering three hits, striking out five, and shutting the Royals out over six innings of work. The Sox bullpen held but reliever Bobby Jenks gave up a two-run homer in the ninth to allow the Royals to pull ahead. Alberto Callaspo got a one-out double in the top of the ninth and then Coco Crisp homered off Jenks for the 2-0 lead. Carlos Quentin led off the Sox half of the ninth with a double and later scored on a Jermaine Dye ground-out. The Sox had a chance to tie the game with runners on first and second with two outs, but Wilson Betemit struck out swinging to end the game. The Sox fall to 1-2 on the young season and welcome the Minnesota Twins to town for a weekend series beginning tomorrow night; Jose Contreras is slated to start for the Sox. more ›

Afternoon Box Score: Thome Powers Sox To Victory

Afternoon Box Score: Thome Powers Sox To Victory

This afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field, Jim Thome powered the White Sox past the Royals 4-2 in the opening game of the season for both teams. The Royals - who the NY Times predicted could be this year's sleeper - had plenty of chances to win, stranding 11 men on base but it was Thome, who stroked his 542nd career home run with two men on in the eight, that gave the Sox the edge. The Royals' Alex Gordon started the scoring with a solo home run off of starter Mark Buehrle in the second inning, but the Sox drew even in the bottom of the inning when Josh Fields singled in Thome. The Royals' Gordon drove in another run in the fifth to give KC the 2-1 lead, but ultimately the game belonged to Thome. Buehrle looked somewhat shaky, giving up six hits, walking three, and giving up two runs in five innings of work, but the Sox bullpen held the lead over four strong innings with Bobby Jenks earning the save. more ›
