Cubs Finally Beat The Cards

Morning Box Score

A day after being shellacked 11-0 by the Kansas City Royals, the White Sox finally got a start out of there high-profile trade acquisition and exploded for 13 runs of their own to blow out the Royals 13-3. Jake Peavy, making his first start for the Sox and coming off a rehab stint, pitched good enough, giving up three runs over five innings. It wasn't a mind-blowing performance, but it was effective enough and White Sox fans can breath a sigh of relief. Meanwhile, the offense exploded for the Pale Hose, led by Carlos Quentin's fifth inning grand slam, which broke a 3-3 tie. The Sox exploded again in the eighth for six runs while the bullpen shut down the Royals offense. Said Peavy of his first performance in Sox black, "I did some things well, and I did some things not so well. I have a long way to go to be where I want to be...I'm used to having more arm strength and having a little more giddy-up. It will all come in time. I'm not so sure how it will come along this year, because I'm so far behind, but it felt good to get out there and compete." The teams close out the series today at 1:05 p.m. (CSN) before the Sox start a crucial six game, seven day stretch against the Twins and Tigers - believe it or not, the Sox are still in striking distance, 5.5 games back of the Tigers.

Morning Box Score

There's not a whole lot Sox fans can take away from last night's 11-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Nothing, in fact. No bright spots. Even Ozzie seems to have finally thrown up his hands, saying after the loss, "My motivational speech before the game, it didn't work at all...I wasted 25 minutes of my time to try to motivate those guys." The White Sox offense only manged three hits off of Royals pitcher Luke Hochaver, who pitched a complete game. Meanwhile, all four Sox pitchers who saw action gave up at least one run. Starter Mark Buehrle gave up the most - five runs over six innings. The Sox remain 6.5 games out of first with 14 games left (meanwhile, the Twins have closed the gap to 3 games). The Sox try to muster...something in an attempt to make one last run at first starting tonight at 6:05 p.m. (WGN).

Afternoon Box Score: Sox Edge Greinke, Royals

The Sox had little trouble with Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke today, tagging the youngster for four runs en route to a 4-2 series clinching victory over Kansas City this afternoon. Paul Konerko doubled in a run for the Pale Hose in the first for an early lead, but after that, all the runs would come on solo homers for both teams. For the Sox, Gordon Beckham (third inning), Carlos Quentin (fourth inning), and Alex Rios (seventh inning) all went deep; Kansas City got solo shots from David DeJesus (fourth) and Mark Teahan (eight). On the mound, the Sox got an excellent performance from Jose Contreras, who shook off a six game winless streak by throwing seven superb innings in which he allowed only three hits and one run (the DeJesus homer) and struck out eight. Thornton pitched an inning and a third for the hold and reliever Bobby Jenks notched his 26th save of the year by retiring the last two batters. The Sox, who are off tomorrow before a weekend series against Baltimore, are still just 2.5 games back of Detroit in the AL Central.

White Sox Roll Past Royals

Morning Box Score

Derek Lee solidified himself as the one Cubs offensive performer worthy of an invitation to the All-Star Game by homering twice and knocking in seven runs as the Cubs raced past the Brewers 9-5. Lee got things started with a three-run homer in the first and was followed up by Jake Fox who hit a solo shot. Mike Cameron hit a two-run shot for the Brewers in the second to cut the Cubs lead in half, but D-Lee responded with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth as the North Siders blew the game wide-open. Geovanny Soto completed the scoring-only-on-homers night for the Cubs as he belted a solo shot in the fourth as well. Of course, never ones to make things easy, the Cubs pitching staff allowed the Brewers to score runs late, but Lee's offense was enough to pace the team. Ryan Dempster had a good start, allowing four runs (three earned) over 6.2 innings while striking out nine. Aaron Heilman allowed a run in the eighth but the bullpen, which included appearances from Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol, held the Brewers. Don't look now, but the Cubs are only 2.5 out of first. The two teams tangle again this afternoon at 1:20 p.m. (CSN).

Afternoon Box Score: Royals Edge Sox

It was a pitchers' duel at U.S. Cellular Field and even a switched up top-of-the-order for the Sox couldn't produce any runs as Kansas City wrapped up the season-opening series with a 2-1 win over the Pale Hose. John Danks was outstanding, scattering three hits, striking out five, and shutting the Royals out over six innings of work. The Sox bullpen held but reliever Bobby Jenks gave up a two-run homer in the ninth to allow the Royals to pull ahead. Alberto Callaspo got a one-out double in the top of the ninth and then Coco Crisp homered off Jenks for the 2-0 lead. Carlos Quentin led off the Sox half of the ninth with a double and later scored on a Jermaine Dye ground-out. The Sox had a chance to tie the game with runners on first and second with two outs, but Wilson Betemit struck out swinging to end the game. The Sox fall to 1-2 on the young season and welcome the Minnesota Twins to town for a weekend series beginning tomorrow night; Jose Contreras is slated to start for the Sox.

Afternoon Box Score: Thome Powers Sox To Victory

This afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field, Jim Thome powered the White Sox past the Royals 4-2 in the opening game of the season for both teams. The Royals - who the NY Times predicted could be this year's sleeper - had plenty of chances to win, stranding 11 men on base but it was Thome, who stroked his 542nd career home run with two men on in the eight, that gave the Sox the edge. The Royals' Alex Gordon started the scoring with a solo home run off of starter Mark Buehrle in the second inning, but the Sox drew even in the bottom of the inning when Josh Fields singled in Thome. The Royals' Gordon drove in another run in the fifth to give KC the 2-1 lead, but ultimately the game belonged to Thome. Buehrle looked somewhat shaky, giving up six hits, walking three, and giving up two runs in five innings of work, but the Sox bullpen held the lead over four strong innings with Bobby Jenks earning the save.

Sox Roll Over Royals

Chicagoist checked our calendars and it's not April Fool's Day, so we're not sure why there are media reports that a contract extansion for White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen is in the works. At least those are the rumors that WMVP AM 1000's baseball beat reporter Bruce Levine said recently. When asked, Guillen denied any talks of an extension with either Sox GM Kenny Williams or team owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Williams similarly denied contract talks,...

While our White Sox managed to tie the KC Royals in the AL Central basement earlier this week, the Cubs are quickly closing in on the other end of the standings. Ted Lilly had another strong outing for the Cubs, who beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night. With the win -- combined with the Milwaukee Brewers' loss -- moved the Cubs to within just two games of first in the NL Central. The...

On this -- officially the slowest sports day of the year -- we will take the opportunity to look back at the first half (or so) of the season for the Cubs and Sox. Fans of both teams entered the season with high expectations. Has either team lived up to those expectations? Cubs After spending a ton of money on free agents during the off season, the Cubs sit in second place in the NL...

We'd known this day was coming, yet we remained in denial. We distracted ourselves with the Bears and hoped we'd suddenly hear some pleasantly unexpected news. Instead, we learn that the White Sox are offically out of the playoff hunt on account of their 14-1 loss to Cleveland Monday night. Earlier in the evening, the Minnesota Twins beat the KC Royals 8-1, cutting their magic number to one. The Sox loss changed it to...

Was it only a week ago that the Sox sat in third place in the AL Central, 10 games behind the Detroit Tigers? My, how things change quickly!

Chicagoist is a baseball fan, first and foremost, but the "national passtime" now officially takes a back seat to football in the hearts and minds of most American sport fans. Especially the NFL. And for that, the NFL can thank the incredible leadership of Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue. Rozelle lead the league from 1960 until 1989, when the outgoing Taliabue took over. During their combined tenure, the league became the most successful pro sports...

Baseball’s non-waiver trading deadline passed today at 3:00pm (CDT). The Cubs and Sox were both rumored to be players in possible deals, with the Cubs likely sellers of players and the Sox looking to add those missing pieces to help them right their ship and hopefully make a return trip to the World Series. Since the Cubs fell out of the running, there had been rumors that Greg Maddux and Todd Walker would get shipped...

The White Sox open a 3-game series against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers tonight in Detroit. Some are considering this a do or die series, even though we're only in mid-July. Amazing how losing 5 of 6 brings out the doom and gloom in so many Sox fans. Especially when it includes a sweep by the Yanks. Fortunately, the local media are trying to talk Sox fans down off the ledge. It's not time to panic -- yet!

Call this week's installment the CBS 2 edition. The TV news channels always supply the best stories, and CBS came up with 5 winners this time.

In spite of the White Sox August and September slumps and Cleveland's torrid second half, the Sox finally assured that they'll reach the postseason. It no longer matters that the Tribe cut a 15-game August 1st lead down to 1 1/2 games at one point last week. The title's ours!

With the fears of an epic choke bubbling to the forefront of most White Sox fans minds lately, manager Ozzie Guillen pulled no punches when he blasted his team following yesterday's loss,
