"One for the Road:" Corey Wilkes Quintet

It takes a talented musician to carry on the legacy of a legend. Corey Wilkes is just that kind of talent.

The young trumpet player is comfortable across a litany of styles, from hard bop and cool jazz, the harder edged soul and funk that often informs the smooth jazz idiom, and the more avant garde musings of the jazz style. Wilkes can tackle all of them with aplomb and his own signature style. Which is why he's managed to carve out a nice career with both his own bands and being tapped by Roscoe Mitchell to fill the void left behind by Lester Bowie in the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Here, he plays in his own quintet with special guest, percussionist Kahil el Zabar.
