City Council approved pushing back the curfew for children 12 and under to 8:30 p.m. The ordinance revision was championed by 8th Ward Ald. Michelle Harris, 15th Ward Ald. Toni Foulkes 18th Ward Ald. Lona Lane as a way to rein in "unsupervised" children saw mixed support from parents and parenting groups, with some in support of the ordinance and others viewing the change to the curfew as a case of government overstepping its bounds.

The curfew rollback received kudos after its approval from Mayor Emanuel, who referred to detractors in a statement: “While the government can do its part, we need parents to do theirs. We need parents to help make sure their children are home safe where they belong."

The curfew for children ages 12 to 16 remains the same.
