Suburban CVS Debuts "Guy Aisle"

2011_9_22_CVS.jpg If our experiences with the CVS at 31st and Halsted in have taught us anything it's that Bridgeport is in need of a good liquor store. Another lesson: don't shop at CVS with its meandering lines and a staff that's just going through the motions.

That's not stopping CVS from trying to get your money. A Tinely Park CVS, working with Proctor and Gamble, recently launched a "Guy Aisle" for men who want to head directly for the shaving cream and razor blades without having to pass through feminine hygiene products and other notions.

A Proctor and Gamble spokesman told the Sun-Times, "Women browse. Guys come in on a mission." No reinforcement of stereotype there. Also reinforcing the stereotype: none of the men who visited the CVS at 17st and LaGrange Road noticed they were in a guy aisle.

Another reason to not shop at CVS.

  • I pose this question:  What story was it that initially prompted me to "like" Chiagoist on facebook?  It sure the as the sharpest corn in my shit isn't "stories" like this one or the "things we'll miss about summer".  Let me know when you are hiring so I can post "articles" about nothing that require little to no research.  Every time I sit on the toilet I'll let you know about the guy that litters by my apartment or about the 15 year old with a boner trying to buy Hustler at the liquor store.

    What is the big deal? I kind of like this idea.  Is there some hidden insult in arranging a store based upon shopping preference of the different genders? if there is I don't see it.

  • The big deal here is the way they spun it and the article itself (linked in this one), not that they created the aisle. They didn't need to reinforce gender stereotypes and instead could have simply said "we created this for the further convenience of our customers and to better organize our products."

    If P&G is backing this, it isn't because of stereotypes, it is because of market research.  They have found a way to separate an extra $1 from ten million people and they are going to use it.  These are the people that have detailed information on how to market to toilet paper wadders *and* folders.
     
    It may be your stereotype, but if they are pushing this it is because they have done the studies and it is their fact, although their facts are probably more detailed and data laiden than the pithy one liner offered.

    Target already does this though right? I've been in two recently, one in Ohio and one in Chicago that has the toiletries divided by gender. I was totally confused because I apparently like man soap and could not find it because I was in the lady aisle.

  • There is indeed a "men's soap" aisle and a "women's soap" aisle at Target, and they also divide razors by gender. But the feminine hygiene products are next to the condoms.

    I guess that makes it the aisle where nobody wants to be seen spending too much time in. 

  • yeah, pretty much. I think the Monistat-type stuff is in that aisle, too. It's the "don't look at your fellow shoppers" aisle.

  • I'd like to see an expansion of the toothbrush section.  I'm limited by only half an aisle of various grip, bristle angle and color options!

    And what's the deal with the women in the check out line!? They've got two compacts, six different lipsticks, lotion, a picture of every friend since first grade, and a lucky unicorn plush toy in that purse! All you need is a credit card! Of course, men take too much time trying to unravel their wad of dollar bills that went through the washing machine, and then they have to go look in the car ashtray to find another 68 cents. Amiright ladies?
