Hey, Lakeview residents. Wasn't it nearly a year ago that you reacted to the news that WalMart was looking at a store in your neighborhood with sturm und drang? Welcome to now.

A WalMart Express location officially opened today at 3636 N. Broadway. Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) and James Cappleman (46th) were both on hand for the opening. (And didn't we say back in April that Tunney's silence on the issue of a Lakeview WalMart spoke volumes?)

Tunney was still silent, preferring to let Cappleman do the talking.

"I have been pleased with Walmart's outreach into our community and the steps they have taken to identify local residents for job opportunities," Cappleman said.

This WalMart Express has a pharmacy and offers groceries and other products. It's smaller in stature than the traditional big box WalMarts, which is part of the company's plan to open up to two dozen stores in Chicago in Chicago. Already we have a WalMart Express in Chatham, a WalMart Neighborhood Market in Presidential Towers and the proposed WalMart at the Broadway on Surf building is still in the works.

Try as some of us may to resist, the floodgates have been opened.
