Another Coyote Spotted on North Side

Someone captured video of what appears to be a coyote on her cell phone on the North side Friday night. It's the second such sighting of coyotes in a week in Chicago.

And it won't be the last.

Can we relax about the recent coyote sightings, people? It's not as though this is a new thing. Coyotes are apparently everywhere and, as they become more acclimated to living in urban areas and developing a taste for Quizno's. Municipal governments took steps to control the coyote population years ago, but they'll still be around. It's nothing to get breathless about. Coyotes are like raccoons, opossum and any other creature living in the wilds of our streets and alleys. They're just minding their own business. We should, as well.

It's really not that strange.  At my old job, right on the river just north of Addison, they'd be there all the time in the winter.  At my new job (Halsted & Blackhawk) I just saw my first one -- but I didn't think much of it.

I thought the city had released them?

Not that surprising. That area has been a development hell ever since Cabrini Green left. Gentrification of the area hasn't exactly panned out.

Is Ogden/Clybourne really considered North side, though?

And now, time for a joke that might have been marginally funny in 2007:

"Coyotes prowling the North Side? I'd worry more about the cougars that prowl the north side! Hi-yo!"

You need to get up around Foster and California. When the ambulances roll from/to Swedish Covenant, the coyotes howl along with the siren.

Um, you published a story about it.

A coyote using a cell phone?

Ah, sanity.  Nice change of pace.
