A DuPage County judge sentenced Robert Lyons to 40 years in prison for killing his mother in 2008 because she wouldn't use a connection to score him Avril Lavigne tickets.

Lyons, 39, hit his mother Linda Bolek in the head with a champagne bottle, then stabbed her so hard that the blade of the knife broke off inside her body. Lyons, who has a history of bi-polar issues, tried to establish an alibi after, calling several friends to say Bolek fell on the knife while trying to attack him. (The two had a volatile relationship and Bolek was believed to have taken a knife to Lyons before.) He poured household cleaners on her body, changed clothes and was later arrested at a Schaumburg Hooters.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

“Linda Bolek did not deserve to die that day by the hands of her own son. She did not deserve to be beaten, stabbed and have chemicals poured over her as she lay helpless on the floor.

“Mr. Lyons however, deserves this punishment. He has earned it and he deserves to spend what likely amounts to the rest of his life removed from society."
