The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents Comic Book Independents, a documentary that uses comic book artists' lives to explore the creative drive of independent artists. In the film directed by Chris Brandt, 24 artists discuss comic books and the inspiration from sequential images from cave paintings to graphic novels.

Following the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring: Chicago cartoonist Jeffrey Brown, author of Darth Vader and Son; dancer and choreographer Jessica Deahr; Dr. Robert Morrison, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Loyola University Chicago, who uses behavioral, computational, and neuroimaging methods to investigate memory and reasoning throughout the lifespan; Dr. Hillary Chute, author of Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics and Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman’s MetaMaus.

This event is presented in conjunction with the world premiere production of Gotham City, which is playing June 8 through July 15 at DCA Storefront Theater.

Comic Book Independents, Claudia Cassidy Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., Tuesday, June 12, 6:29 p.m. to 8:29 p.m., Free, No reservation required
