Pete Holmes is a weird guy. He’s tall, his laugh carries several city blocks, and he can come across to some as awkward. But if ever there was a guy who owns these things without an ounce of self-consciousness, it would be Holmes. He’s an open book about himself, his past, and his current obsessions and this is what makes his comedy work.

Last year was a big one for Holmes including hosting a cancelled too soon late night TBS show and the release of his comedy special Nice Try, The Devil. Holmes also hosts a unique podcast on the Nerdist network called You Made It Weird which can take a turn for the strange. It’s his good nature and willingness to be the butt of a joke which makes making it weird OK, and makes it easy for the guests to really open up, telling some great stories as they do. One of our personal favorites, and a good place to start with the show, is his first interview with his close friend Kumail Nanjiani, a comedian Holmes came up the ranks with.

Holmes is headed back to Chicago, where he got his start, to perform at UP Comedy Club this weekend. Friday night will see be a live taping of You Made It Weird, at 10:30 p.m. and then Saturday will feature two stand-up shows, one at 8 p.m.. and another at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for all three events. UP is a great club for getting up close and personal with your favorite comedians, and one of our favorite places to see comedy. This looks to be a good set of shows, folks. You know what to do.

UP Comedy Club is located at 230 W. North Ave., 3rd floor.
