Chicagoist Podcast: Summer Vacation

It's summer vacation time here at the Chicagoist offices and our own podcast is not immune to such schedule changes. Over the next two weeks, there will be no Chicagoist Podcast as we take a summer hiatus, but we'll return in mid-July with a whole host of new material and podcasts. As always, keep the email suggestions for future podcast topics coming in at Karl (at) Chicagoist (dot) com and catch up on some of the podcasts you may have missed, including:

Mike Gebert took a road trip to Iowa recently to film some behind-the-scenes footage at La Quercia in Norwalk, IA. La Quercia owners Herb and Kathy Eckhouse make some of the best dry-cured artisan salumi available, particularly prosciutto and guanciale. Jeffrey Steingarten called La Quercia's prosciutto "the best American or imported prosciutto [he's] ever tasted," while Bon Appetit once named La Quercia "Food Artisans of the Year."

Chicagoist Podcast - Spring Break Roundup

The Chicagoist Podcast Series is taking a week off, due to a general overdose of news, D-Pete mania, and too much grilling. But fear not, rather than leave you with a total lack of audio entertainment, we've compiled a list of some of the finest podcasts known to the Chicagoland area.

Rick Telander visited the On the DL Podcast this week in an outstanding interview. We've always been partial to Telander as far as the Sun-Times' sports writers go, and the interview just further cements his status. Listen to what he has to say about working with Mariotti and running into him in a sauna by clicking here [MP3]. We also loved this segment [MP3] on the Cubs' playoff flame-out. Hell, the entire interview is worth checking out, so get clicking. [via Awful Announcing]

The Movie Queens (AKA Windy City Times film critic Richard Knight Jr. and local theater genius David Kodeski) delighted us when we interviewed them late last year, with Richard slamming the Robin Williams stinker License to Wed as the worst film of the year and David going ga-ga over such disparate movies as Coffin Joe and The Driver's Seat. So we're extra delighted that they've just launched a new podcast. It's available for download at their new blog.

This American Life. A radio show, unlike any other radio show on the airwaves. They have humor, they have grace, yet, at the same time they give an insight to everyday life. They seem to have it all, except one thing, one tiny little thing. Free Podcasts. (We apologize for our bad Ira Glass impression, kind of hard to do an impression in this medium.)

With such a proliferation of food- and cooking-focused blogs and web sites out there, some days it's all Chicagoist can do to get to a handful of them to keep up. However, as is the case with the industry itself, the more the merrier. So in the same way we're always stoked to find a new approach to duck breast, we're equally as happy to find a blog with a different twist.

One major drawback to having an endless array of cultural offerings at our front yard is that any attempt to condense our experiences into a year-end summary or “Best Of” list necessarily falls short. Not a huge loss since Top 10 lists are so passe. [Note to our editors: this doesn’t apply to you, we’re sure any lists you publish will be awesome!] Instead we turn our attention to an overriding theme of ’05: the...
