Officer Wounded, Man Killed In Shooting Near Museum Campus

A Chicago police officer was shot in the leg and a male suspect was fatally shot when police
responded to call near the Museum Campus on Thursday night.

Bike-patrol officers responded to a call at around 8:13 p.m. that a man was “acting erratically” in the 1800 block of S. Calumet, according to police. The suspect shot one officer when they approached; and another officer fired back, hitting the man in the lower body.

The struck officer, 44, was transported to Northwestern Hospital and listed in good condition. His partner helped apply a tourniquet at the scene. The suspect was also taken to Northwestern, where he was pronounced dead.

"This is just another example of too many guns, too many people willing to use them," Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters. "But it also illustrates how Chicago police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep the city of Chicago safe."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel—who, according to Johnson, visited the wounded officer in the hospital—released a statement on Thursday night:

The officer has been placed on routine administrative work for 30 days; and the Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.

Update 11:50 a.m.:
The officer has been treated and released from the hospital, police confirmed with Chicagoist.
