A Chicago police officer on Tuesday night suffered a graze wound to the face while pursuing a man believed to have been involved in a carjacking, according to police.
Officers tried to curb a vehicle, which matched the description of a stolen car, in the 600 block of East 100th Place at around 10 p.m., a police spokeswoman told Chicagoist. A man inside the car then fired shots at police, who fired back. The suspect, who was not hit, crashed the car in the 10000 block of South Eggleston, according to CPD Communications Director Anthony Guglielmi. Police arrested the suspect after he attempted to run. A handgun was recovered at the scene, and charges are pending, police told Chicagoist on Wednesday morning.
The struck officer, who is in his 30s, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he is recovering.
Supt. Eddie Johnson addressed the media later on Tuesday.
“The officer injured will be OK, but it just goes to show you, again, how people are out here with all these weapons and they’re not afraid to use them,” he said, according to ABC7.
According to the Tribune, the suspect is a 24-year-old parolee who served three-plus years for armed robbery and attempted arm robbery.
