Tiger Woods has announced he will be the lead designer of a new, $30 million golf complex built in Jackson Park on the southern lakefront. The long-in-the-works renovations to Jackson Park's existing golf facilities are expected to cost $30 million and include an 18-hole championship course and a shorter course. The Tribune broke the news Friday.
The goal, according to a statement Woods' design firm TGR Designs sent to the newspaper, is to "create incredible possibilities for communities on the South Side. We want to design a course that everyone will enjoy."
Mayor Rahm Emanuel heralded the news in a statement Friday and said that longtime Jackson Park golfers would not be priced out of using the new course:
"This is more than simply a unique opportunity to renovate a historic public golf course, it’s a unique opportunity to drive resources and investments on the South Side," his statement says. "And even with this restoration the course will remain a real community asset because we're going to ensure that the neighborhood golfers who have been hitting the links here for years will be able to continue to access and enjoy it at a reduced rate."
Emanuel is expected to announce plans for a non-profit group called Chicago Parks Golf Alliance this weekend, which will speared efforts to improve the park district's golf courses and raise money for the Jackson Park project.
