Tiger Attacks Cog Hill, Wins BMW Championship

The PGA Tour made its lone swing through the Chicago area this weekend, playing the BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in suburban Lemont. Tiger Woods didn't disappoint the crowds, running away with the tournament on the club's newly redesigned Dubsdread Course.

It's been quite a week for Western Illinois' Kyle Peterman at the U.S. Open, but, sadly for Peterman, his golf is done for the weekend. On Saturday, Peterman, playing as an amateur, finished his second round at the rain-plagued Open and hit the clubhouse with an overall score of 16 over par (+11 first round, +5 second round) well off the +4 score necessary to make the cut. Still, we hope to hear big things about Peterman in the future.

In honor of this weekend's U.S. Open, Bill Murray has a story for us in this clip from the classic movie Caddyshack.

Western Illinois Golfer Makes U.S. Open

Western Illinois' Kyle Peterman is ready to roll with the big dogs at next week's USGA U.S. Open, the second golf major of the year. Peterman earned one of the 14 spots reserved for amateurs by claiming the qualifier held at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club in Grayslake in a sudden death playoff yesterday morning. Peterman, who will be a senior next year, bested Northwestern freshman Eric Chun and former University of Illinois player Patrick Nagle to earn the spot at next week's tournament. In dramatic - dare we say Tiger-like? - fashion, Peterman sank a six-foot birdie putt on the second hole while Chun and Nagle parred.

We dig the Fox Sports show Sport Science, and here's another reason why. Can PGA golfer Padraig Harrington (two-time defending British Open and defending PGA Championship winner) drive a golf ball farther by employing the Happy Gilmore method? Check it out. [via Kottke]

Apologizing, Northern Trust to Pay Back Bailout Funds

Northern Trust, after receiving $1.5 million in Troubled Asset Relief Program funds, has apologized for sponsoring the PGA Northern Trust Open golf tournament in Los Angeles last weekend, and has pledged to repay the bailout funds it has received. Northern Trust CEO Frederick Waddell wrote in a letter to U.S. Rep Barney Frank, D-Mass.:

Hey, dad, can you give me a ride? Oh, you want to be a brief media sensation? Then yeah, a ride in your plane is cool, too.

Who knew "celebrity" golf tournaments could be such a flustercuck? Not Caddyshack star Cindy "Lacey Underall" Morgan. She hosted a 2006 event, which was supposed to benefit the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund, turned out to be a disaster. A giant no-money-making, friendship-ending, lawsuit-generating disaster. Morgan says only about 100 people played golf, that the Caddyshack cast members who did show (Bill Murray and Chevy Chase weren't there) left early, and now she's on the...

Nailah Franklin is still missing today, but her car was found in Hammond, Ind., over the weekend. Now police are searching the Lake Michigan shoreline, too. According to the Trib, "Police found Franklin's vehicle near an abandoned building in Hammond on Friday night, and on Saturday searched a pond at the River Oaks Golf Course in Calumet City. [Franklin's sister] said personal items belonging to Franklin and found near the pond prompted the search, which...

Some new ballistics analysis disputes accounts by Chicago cops about what happened in a 2005 shooting of an unarmed man. A dog near Prairie Isle Golf Club got bit by a rare Eastern massasauga rattlesnake. No charges will be filed in connection to the Chicago cop/DC cop bar brawl. A homeless woman has been indicted on murder and aggravated...

The White Sox signed infielder Eduardo Perez to a minor-league contract on Monday. Awesome because all he does is strike out or hit home runs. Who's puncturing the tires of a couple dozen school buses in the suburbs? Although the police maintain that officers acted appropriately in the shooting death of Cornelius Ware, a 20-year-old paraplegic, the city has agreed to pay his family $5.2 million. John H. Bryan and Richard Gray, who helped...

As playwrights age, their work may increasingly confront how they, or anyone, will be remembered after death. Their passing will command respectful obituaries and festivals in tribute, but it’s also the moment when they relinquish all control of their legacy. What a terrifying thought for someone who’s made a living playing God! This season, the Goodman and Shattered Globe pay tribute to Pulitzer Prize winners August Wilson (1945-2005) and Arthur Miller (1915-2005), respectfully, in productions...

Forty thousand runners are making their final preparations for the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Chicagoist thought it would be fun to learn more about the people making up this bunch.

Pull out your worst pair of "Bad Pants" and wear them to the 9th Annual "Bad Pants" Charity Golf Open on September 11 at Indian Lakes Resort.

Chicagoist tends to be a bit of a punk ass when it comes to the ‘burbs, especially those to the west. Rare is the moment where we pass on an opportunity to make a snide remark about the carefully groomed lawns and oversized homes found in those enclaves that so often bear the words “park”, “lawn”, “oak”, or “ville” in their names.

This week was a little light on the stupid, but we know it’s just because you’re saving it all up for the big holiday weekend. Grills, beer, fireworks – the possibilities are endless. No, seriously, we want you to be safe and commit no crazy crimes. Really, we do.

augustwilson.jpgThe theater world lost a giant yesterday. Widely hailed as one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century, Wilson created rich, intimate, and unparalleled stage portraits of the African-American experience.

CBS 2 Chicago is reporting that Route 59, near Streamwood, was closed today after a dairy service truck left a rich, delicious, calcium-rich slick frozen to its surface. The truck reportedly crossed the center line early this morning after encountering slippery road conditions, Smacks-ing into three other vehicles before rolling over and leaking milk all over the road from its teats. Several people were reportedly injured and taken to local hospitals, but none of the injuries were thought to be too serious.

A suburban Barrington man is pretty teed off. Since Makray Memorial Golf Club debuted its new course layout in June, Donald Holz's yard bordering the 12th fairway has been "pelted with hundreds of wayward balls."
