A year ago, Natasha McShane was savagely beaten with a baseball bat during a Bucktown mugging. She seemed well on her way to recovery when her parents brought her home to Northern Ireland for more medical attention. But McShane's father, Liam, tells the Sun-Times that his daughter has had to deal with a series of setbacks since and her recovery has actually regressed.

More Violence Overnight
After Saturday night's outbreak of violence, Sunday saw a similar rash of shootings that's left as many as 12 injured and 3 dead. The first reported incident occurred yesterday afternoon shortly after 1 p.m. in the city's West Elsdon neighborhood and the last one happened around 5:30 a.m. this morning in the Uptown neighborhood where a man was shot by a bike-riding gunman. Shootings in Brighton Park, Little Village, and Englewood resulted in deaths. In addition to the four shootings deaths this weekend, another man died as a result of injuries sustained in a beating in Bridgeport early Sunday morning. With the five deaths since Saturday afternoon, May 2010 has seen 43 murders, slightly down from last May's total of 47, but that's not saying much.

As charges are filed in last week's Bucktown bat attack, police are dealing with a separate beating incident on the Northwest Side.
Pair Sue Over Allegedly Unprovoked Police Beating
A pair of men are suing the Chicago Police Department for what they claim was an unprovoked beating by plainclothes police officers outside a Bucktown restaurant in early February. Matthew Clark and University of Chicago lecturer Gregory Malandrucco have filed the lawsuit over the attack during which they claim they both suffered broken noses and concussions. The incident allegedly began inside Arturo's, a Mexican restaurant at the corner of Armitage and Western. CBS 2 has surveillance footage of the beatings. Per the Tribune:
Another Fenger Student Charged In Albert's Death
A 14 year old student from Fenger High School has been charged in the September beating death of fellow student Derrion Albert. The student is the fourth currently charged in the murder; Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, are all being held for the murder. Another teen, Eugene Bailey, has since been released after charges against him were dropped. [Tribune]
Secret Service Enhances Brawl Video
Yesterday, CPD Supt. Jody Weis said he's asked the U.S. Secret Service for help enhancing the video of the brawl that killed 16-year-old Derrion Albert. The USSS has complied and it seems like there are results. As WBBM 780 reports, Secret Service spokeswoman Kristina Schmidt said, "We do have some preliminary results that we have shared with the Chicago Police Department, and we continue to work further to come up with additional results." A CPD spokesman said no arrests have been made and it's too soon to discuss the results of the analysis.
Brawl Leads To Boy's Death
Derrion Albert, 16, was beaten to death in the midst of violent brawl yesterday afternoon. The brawl occurred yesterday afternoon around 3 p.m. near 111th and Wallace in Roseland. According to the Tribune:
Abbate Avoids Jail Time
We're still waiting for more details, but according to a Sun-Times tweet Abbate has been sentenced to two years probation for the taped beating of bartender Karolina Obrycka. He was found guilty on a charge of aggravated battery three weeks ago.
2 Charged in Sauk Village Attack Caught on Camera Phone
Police in Sauk Village are trying to determine who shot the footage of a June 2 fight that left one teenage girl with a burnt scalp and a chunk of hair cut from her head.
Chicago Cop Accused of Attacking Bar Patrons
Only a day after ABC’s 20/20’s “Are Cops Above the Law?” exposé, where Chicago police were highlighted for their recent rash of drunken cop beaters, another cop is on the beat, so to speak. Gerald Callahan, an off-duty Chicago cop, was arrested for allegedly attacking two patrons at Chambers Seafood Grill & Chop in Niles. Niles police were called to the lounge about 1:50 a.m. Saturday morning, but Callahan had fled. At 2:30 a.m., he was found a few blocks away, passed out in bushes. He was arrested and charged with two counts of battery.
