Odds were solid that the bustle of a restaurant kitchen would be music to the ears of Christian and Omar. Their father Jose owns and operates Bridgeport mainstay Tacos Erendira and makes one of our favorite al pastor tacos in the city. Mother Maria is the sugar behind the spice of North Center's Café 28 as its longtime pastry chef. Now the sons enter the cutthroat world of restaurants with a concept that's downright bold in a neighborhood whose idea of brunch is eating a Polish sausage and fries from Maxwell Street Depot and drinking a Mickey's Big mouth on the hood of your car.

We recently spent a Saturday afternoon in the kitchen at moto. Chef Homaro Cantu set things on fire for us (video this afternoon!) while Chef Ben Roche created and destroyed a dessert for our benefit (pictures of that this week). We also captured images of a new bagel and lox menu item and how the salmon gets smoked right at your table (keep watching for those, too). For now, enjoy some images of moto's cuisine and be sure to return for behind the scene pictures.

Our recent visit to Star Lounge Café delighted our specialty coffee needs but we will confidently say that their sandwiches alone are a reason to go back. Particularly for breakfast. They offer an egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich as well as a bagel with peanut butter and banana (childhood fav!) but the sandwich that stuck out most was the brie, spinach and mushroom hot panini. And yes, for breakfast. The savory brie oozed out the slightly buttery, toasted ciabatta and there was just the right amount of vegetables inside- enough to make us think we’re actually having a healthy breakfast and not enough to overpower the sandwich. Choose grapes instead of chips and you’ve got yourself a meal. The secret to their sandwich? They get it from the highly adored lunch spot, Southport Grocery. Ahh yes. It’s all starting to make sense. Star Lounge’s specialty is coffee and they’re stickin’ to it. Better to get your sandwiches from a place that specializes it than throw some turkey on bread and serve it to your patrons like many coffee shops do and shouldn’t.

The Chicagoist food and drink staff recently dined at Ina's for breakfast (). Here are some pictures. Enjoy!

Kids are always stirring up trouble in the kitchen, but this weekend they can make a mess of the pots and pans at someone else’s place. Whole Foods, which will be hosting cooking classes for kids and adults all summer at the Farm House in Lincoln Park Zoo, is holding a special children’s program on Saturday that features berries as the main ingredient. The instructor is Chef Melissa Graham of Purple Asparagus, a local non-profit organization that aims to unite families through the joy that is good eating.

If there are any of you downtown worker bees in the vicinity of Emerald Loop tomorrow before 9 a.m. might want to drop in and enjoy a complimentary breakfast. Because the saying around here is, "If it's free, it's for me."
