Breakfast in Review: The White Palace Grill

Canal Street's White Palace Grill gets a lot of publicity. Why? Because it’s open 24 hours a day? Because it has a rich history? Because it was on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives? Or perhaps because it bites its thumb at “foodie-food” like so many of late? From the White Palace Grill website, “If you need a break from "caramelized onions", "infused" sauces and names of food you can't pronounce then come over anytime 24 hours a day 365 days a year, we will be there to serve you comfort food.” Message received. more ›

Fresh & Local: M. Henrietta's Recipe for Success

The old adage says that two heads are sometimes better than one. Can the same be said about restaurants? When the owners of M. Henrietta set out to replicate the success of their popular flagship M. Henry by opening a sister restaurant - appropriately named M. Henrietta - they were tempting diners and fate. If the long wait list for Sunday brunch is any indication, culinary lightning can strike twice. more ›

Review - Breakfast at Frances’ Deli

We already knew we liked the sandwiches at Frances’ in Lincoln Park. While in search of a good breakfast place on a recent Saturday, we stopped in to see what they had to offer in the way of eggs and tasty breakfast meats. Touting itself as the “oldest deli in Lincoln Park,” Frances’ serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the hungry people roaming Clark Street. more ›

North Side Cheap Eats - Cornerstone Cafe

Nestled in the crook of Western, Diversey and Elston in Logan Square is the Cornerstone Café. While out of the way for many Chicagoans, the Cornerstone impressed us as worth the trip with its unassuming food, friendly atmosphere, and reasonable prices. With a cozy interior populated with booths, wooden tables, and an old-fashioned lunch counter that mimics the shape of the intersection, the Cornerstone is frequented largely by Logan Square and Bucktown locals. Upon entry, we were greeted by a few older fellows who appeared to have set up shop for the entire morning with endless cups of coffee and newspapers spread across the countertop. In a local cafe, that’s a good sign. more ›

Despite Kinks, Nana Off To Noble Start

Odds were solid that the bustle of a restaurant kitchen would be music to the ears of Christian and Omar. Their father Jose owns and operates Bridgeport mainstay Tacos Erendira and makes one of our favorite al pastor tacos in the city. Mother Maria is the sugar behind the spice of North Center's Café 28 as its longtime pastry chef. Now the sons enter the cutthroat world of restaurants with a concept that's downright bold in a neighborhood whose idea of brunch is eating a Polish sausage and fries from Maxwell Street Depot and drinking a Mickey's Big mouth on the hood of your car. more ›

Food Pr0n: moto, Take #1

             + 0 more

We recently spent a Saturday afternoon in the kitchen at moto. Chef Homaro Cantu set things on fire for us (video this afternoon!) while Chef Ben Roche created and destroyed a dessert for our benefit (pictures of that this week). We also captured images of a new bagel and lox menu item and how the salmon gets smoked right at your table (keep watching for those, too). For now, enjoy some images of moto's cuisine and be sure to return for behind the scene pictures. more ›

One Great Sandwich (Breakfast Edition): Southport Grocery's Brie, Spinach, Mushroom

One Great Sandwich (Breakfast Edition): Southport Grocery's Brie, Spinach, Mushroom

Our recent visit to Star Lounge Café delighted our specialty coffee needs but we will confidently say that their sandwiches alone are a reason to go back. Particularly for breakfast. They offer an egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich as well as a bagel with peanut butter and banana (childhood fav!) but the sandwich that stuck out most was the brie, spinach and mushroom hot panini. And yes, for breakfast. The savory brie oozed out the slightly buttery, toasted ciabatta and there was just the right amount of vegetables inside- enough to make us think we’re actually having a healthy breakfast and not enough to overpower the sandwich. Choose grapes instead of chips and you’ve got yourself a meal. The secret to their sandwich? They get it from the highly adored lunch spot, Southport Grocery. Ahh yes. It’s all starting to make sense. Star Lounge’s specialty is coffee and they’re stickin’ to it. Better to get your sandwiches from a place that specializes it than throw some turkey on bread and serve it to your patrons like many coffee shops do and shouldn’t. more ›

"Berry Good Fun" for Kids

"Berry Good Fun" for Kids

Kids are always stirring up trouble in the kitchen, but this weekend they can make a mess of the pots and pans at someone else’s place. Whole Foods, which will be hosting cooking classes for kids and adults all summer at the Farm House in Lincoln Park Zoo, is holding a special children’s program on Saturday that features berries as the main ingredient. The instructor is Chef Melissa Graham of Purple Asparagus, a local non-profit organization that aims to unite families through the joy that is good eating. more ›
