Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week:" Crispin Honeycrisp Cider

This being the harvest season, we'll be dedicating the next three weeks selections to brews that reflect in-season fruits or flavors. One of those flavors that we live for this time of year is honey crisp apple. Anthony even showed readers how to incorporate honey crisps into a cocktail. Honey Crisps also make a damn good cider.

Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": J.K.'s Organic Scrumpy Hard Cider

The word "scrumpy" sounds like a schoolyard diss: "Let's go pick on that scrumpy looking kid." A scrumpy is actually a type of farmhouse cider. The term comes from western and southern English slang for a withered apple. Some English scrumpys have a tartness and alcohol content that are among the roughest ciders we've ever encountered.

Who wants an ice-cold cocktail when temps are this bone-chilling? Not us. And certainly not your party guests, should you be throwing a holiday party over the next few weeks. Place a warm mug full of something high-octane in their frost-bitten hands as soon as their coats have come off and they'll be toasty in no time.

We've spent more time than we care to admit in recent weeks at the Publican digging on swine, oysters and beer. For those who haven't read Jacy's "First Look," here's the link to tie you over while we finish our full review for Friday. With over 70 listings, the Publican's beer menu is extensive, but not expansive like Hopleaf or Map Room. One of the winning selections on their draft menu is a French cider that we highly recommend with at least three of their cheese selections.

          

When we headed off to Daley Plaza this morning, we didn’t expect to find much that we hadn’t seen the week before. But the market always manages to surprise us and this morning was no exception! Some new items had come into season, and we found some new varietals to try out in the coming week.
