Since we announced the inaugural installment of Chicago's Diner en Blanc on Monday, there have been two major developments. First, the son of the organizer of the original Paris Diner en Blanc contacted us to disavow the Chicago installment of the event, citing a potential trademark violation. Second, we were alerted to a similar event, another flashmob in white, also in August. What a week! more ›

Weekend Diversion: "Hip Hop" Cupcakes Feature Cupcakes in... Blackface?

If this won't make you sick of the decade-long cupcake trend, we don't know what will: Duncan Hines released a commercial with "hip hop" cupcakes that sing weird auto-tuned techno-trance (honestly, we don't know what to call this music). But that's not the weirdest, most offensive part of the whole deal - these cupcakes are in blackface. more ›

Guillen: Asian Players Get Special Treatment Over Latinos

Guillen: Asian Players Get Special Treatment Over Latinos

Ozzie Guillen's comments have remained relatively free of controversy since the little Twitter flap in spring training. But he made a stir on Sunday when he knocked MLB for a double standard among its foreign players. Guillen said he believes that the Asian players are treated better than the Latino players when they come to the U.S. to play ball. Guillen based these comments on the fact that players from Japan and Korea get translators while the Spanish speaking players receive no such benefit. "Very bad. I say, why do we have Japanese interpreters and we don't have a Spanish one. I always say that. Why do they have that privilege and we don't?" Guillen asked. more ›

The day many have dreaded - and even more have dismissed - will finally arrive tomorrow. The Sears Tower will cease to be and instead, in a ceremony, the building - the tallest in the U.S. of A. - will become The Willis Tower officially. Antioch Parents Upset Over Book Choice

Antioch Parents Upset Over Book Choice

A group of parents at Antioch High School hope to have a Sherman Alexie novel assigned to incoming freshmen for summer reading banned, describing the book as "vulgar" and "racist." The book at the center of the controversy is Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which was good enough to earn accolades like the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, named one of the Los Angeles Times' Favorite Children's Books of 2007, and named New York Times' Notable Children's Books of 2007. But such awards are not enough for some parents who want the book pulled off the list. more ›
