Oak Brook's Library Hater Turns Crankiness On Fire Dept.

Not only does Oak Brook’s crankiest resident hate libraries, he also has issues with police and firefighters. In a heated Village Board meeting, Constantine Xinos, enemy of library loving children everywhere, suggested the village fire one firefighter a month until an agreement was reached regarding pensions. Xinos stated “Firemen, like cops, are street people. They only understand civilized force. That’s what they understand. You fire ‘em!” Connie, hoping that pressure from family would cause firefighters to back down, continued (while presumably twisting an evil looking mustache): “Maybe they'll sue us. Maybe they'll win something three years from now. She'll leave him. He'll be out of the house. The dog will be dead and the kids will be out on the streets.” more ›

Today's Weather: Cranky

Fall officially begins tonight at 10:09 p.m. but it won't feel like it over the next few days. In fact, it'll be hard to tell the difference between late September and late June. Highs today will reach into the mid-to-upper 70s. There's still a chance of rain, too, as we hang out under gray skies, but nothing approaching the ferocity of last night's storms that did some damage in areas around Chicago. Lows tonight will fall only to the upper 60s as a chance of rain persists. more ›

Today's Weather: Cranky

Today woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Besides lingering rain showers, today's going to be a chillier, more raw day than we've seen since, well, Saturday. While we'll see temps in the mid-40s at some point, even as the clouds thin out a little later temps will tumble into the upper 30s. Adding to the fun? Gusty winds of up to 30 mph at times. more ›

Today's Weather: Cranky

Our first chance of snow of the season has turned up...well, nothing. Not that you'll hear most of the staff complain about this, especially as they bundle up. It'll be the coldest day we've had since mid-March, with highs reaching only the mid-30s. And snow is not out of the question, either, as there's a chance of ongoing snow flurries/showers throughout the day. But don't worry: there's no accumulation expected. Lows tonight will drop into the mid-20s as a slight chance of flurries remains. more ›

Oprah's Party Makes Some Cranky

Oprah's Party Makes Some Cranky

When it was announced that Oprah would be shutting down a portion of Michigan Ave (between Ohio and Wacker) to shoot her 24th season premiere, we heard from many people not too happy about the move. And now at least one city official is getting cranky about the closure. Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen (38th Ward) told the Sun-Times, "Two-and-a-half days is kind of reckless. It smacks of elitism. The citizens own the street. Maybe they should ask the people how they feel." There's also some argument as to whether or not Oprah's folks were required to follow the usual protocol of giving 45 days notice to Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) who says they gave him 10 days notice. But Special Events spokeswoman Cindy Gatziolis told the Sun-Times this isn't classified as a "special event" and therefore didn't require 45 days: "This falls under the category of film and TV production. Those require a two-day notice. This has been much more than a two-day notice." more ›

Today's Weather: Crankypants

Well. Summer was nice while it lasted, no? Those overnight showers that many in the northern part of the area saw aren't exactly a thing of the past: they're still around this morning and the NWS says we still have a 60 percent chance of rain today. Highs might top out in the mid-70s and a look at the extended forecast shows that today might provide the highest temps we'll see for a few days. So...Late August is the new Late September? A chance of showers is likely into the night-time hours with lows in the mid-60s. But in a summer where the Cubs get spanked by one of the worst franchises in baseball, what else can you really expect, people? more ›

Today's Weather: Cranky

We hope you got outside and enjoyed the weather yesterday because today is going to be...not nearly as nice. Temps will be warmer as they climb into the lower 70s, but there's going to be some rain, especially before 1 p.m. Even if you manage to dodge rain drops during the day, the chance of rain looks like it will extend into tonight and tomorrow, so keep the umbrella handy. more ›

Today's Weather: Cranky

It's a Monday, alright, but a Spring Monday. Which means instead of snow, we're dealing with storms. Today's going to be sketchy on the weather side as showers and storms move in mainly after 1 p.m. We'll have highs in the upper 70s and gusty winds to blow stuff around. The rain continues into tonight and the wee hours of the morning, but it'll cool off as lows drop to the mid-to-upper 40s and we'll be back to seasonal temps with sunnier weather during the mid-week. more ›
