Lemonheads Lean On The Past

Lemonheads leader Evan Dando is a music fan of wide ranging tastes. His choice of covers, both in concert and in the studio, pays testament to this with some of his most famous choices reworking tunes by The Misfits, Paul & Simon, and Suzanne Vega. So it's not surprising that his latest album Varshons, performed with the umpteenth incarnation of his band, should tackle covers with a dizzying variety of sources. more ›

It'd Be A Shame If You Didn't Win

It'd Be A Shame If You Didn't Win

Honestly, the last time The Lemonheads were in town they blew us away. Evan Dando carries an unfair reputation of putting on shambolic shows, and while that may have been true in the past, we've never seen that side of him. Sure, on-stage he can come across as a pleasantly buzzed good-time dude between songs, but once the music starts, he's locked into each and every song, injecting a ruggedness into his sweet pop tunes. more ›

Three Thumbs Up

Three Thumbs Up

Man is there a lot going on tonight. Are you sure it's only Wednesday? Because it sure feels like the party is already kicking into high Friday mode. The last few weeks have been a tad lackluster, music-wise, but December is taking this year out with a bang! Here are just a few of tonight's options. Evan Dando resurrects The Lemonheads tonight at Double Door. We caught him last time he came through town and... more ›

We're Fallin' In Line ...

...for Frisbie’s New Debut. Masters of the turn of phrase and worshippers at the altar of harmony, Frisbie is back in full force. Things look a little different, and the elements have changed. The local band that seemed destined for stardom had some things to work out. Through all of the uncertainty and doubt, the growing pains and a very pregnant pause – Frisbie has come out better for the wear. But they haven’t remained... more ›

Lemonheads Sweet, Not Sour

Lemonheads Sweet, Not Sour

It never takes us this long to write a review, we swear. We just wanted to let a little time pass so we could make sure that what we saw was what we saw. Rarely do we attend a rock and/or roll show and walk out with a huge smile plastered across our mug. Even rarer does this happen when you’re in a room full of people that paid twenty bucks a ticket. And, rare... more ›

Decent Days and Nights

Decent Days and Nights

What a great week for indie-pop. We are seriously psyched to revisit some old favorites while experiencing some newer friends for the first time. Robbers on High Street have garnered a lot of buzz, and while their latest digital-only EP is not an entirely convincing justification for their acclaim, it’s certainly strong enough to pique our curiosity. Expect Subterranean to be pretty crowded as everyone tries to discern whether these cats have the legs to... more ›

Take a Ride to the North Side

Take a Ride to the North Side

There’s just too much good stuff going on this weekend to sit inside and enjoy the air-conditioning. And most of this good stuff is happening at two places: the Metro and the Music Box. So Chicagoist suggests you just camp out on the North Side for the next few days. Tonight, Metro has the MC5 reunion tour (with Lemonhead Evan Dando thrown in for good measure) and hyped young bands Franz Ferdinand tomorrow (in a sold-out show, sorry procrastinating hipsters) and the Secret Machines on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Music Box – as part of their great Weekend Matinee series – will show Jim Jarmusch’s wonderful Canterbury Tales-inspired Mystery Train on Saturday and Sunday, and play Wes Anderson’s droll, under-appreciated Bottle Rocket tonight and tomorrow at midnight. Trust us, with so much hip music and deadpan comedy, you’ll feel cool enough without your beloved A.C.
