The indoor winter market runs from January through April. Matthias Merges, Chef of newly-opened Yusho, will be running a demo.

New Farmers Market Starts Today at Trump
If you're not a fan of Trump, don't worry - you don't have to go inside the glittering tower of wealth, power and over-priced cocktails to get to the market.
City Provisions Announces Brunch, We Rejoice
Last week, City Provisions (our favorite charcuterie maker and all-around great local food emporium) announced that they would start serving brunch. CP already makes its own bacon, corned beef, pates and sandwiches, and starting this Sunday, June 26th, City Provisions will be serving an expanded menu from 10-2. The menu, which looks drool-worthy, will include latkes, whiskey-glazed ham, fresh biscuits and donuts, duck fat home fries and house-cured salmon.
Cilantro is Loaded with Pesticides, but Probably Won't Kill You
The USDA regularly tests produce for pesticides and other chemicals - and they were surprised to find cilantro (the first fresh herb tested) was absolutely loaded with pesticides. The Tribune's Monica Eng reported that 94% of the samples taken by the USDA tested positive for at least one pesticide, and 44% showed pesticides not approved for use in Cilantro - the number in apples was 2%.
Farmers Market Season is Upon Us! Green City Market Opens Wednesday, More Throughout May
Calling all locavores, market shoppers, friends of farmers and lovers of fine food! Green City Market, the city's premier organic farmer's market, opens for the season on Wednesday. We've enjoyed Green City's fall and winter offerings at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, but there's nothing like getting into the park again. We'll be attending the opening day and taking pictures, so if you can't get down there, you can be worked up for the Saturday market. From here on out, Green City is every Wednesday and Saturday from 7 AM to 1PM. Green City isn't the only market that's about to start up - a schedule of May openings is after the jump.
Free Apps and Some More Cemita, Please!
In the predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood of Humboldt Park, you’ll find a neighborhood staple and a unique Mexican favorite at Cemitas Puebla. Well known but still unassuming, the humble storefront of Cemitas Puebla offers bold, flavorful and unique cemitas that keeps dedicated followers coming back for more.
Do This: Food Film Series at Chicago History Museum
Througout October, the Chicago History Museum is running a free film series devoted to food and food activism. The date for the first movie, Food Inc., has already passed (though if you have Netflix Instant View, you can watch it there), but there are two more upcoming films. On October 10th at 1:30, CHM will be showing The Future of Food, Deborah Koons Garcia's documentary on the growing pervasiveness of unlabeled, genetically modified foods and their place in grocery stores. On October 17th at 1:30, FRESH will be screened; FRESH features author Michael Pollan and "celebrates the American farmers and business people who are re-inventing our food system. We've seen the Future of Food, and it's definitely worth watching - and we'll probably be checking out FRESH when it screens.
Today's Weather: Fresh
We made it! It's 2010. In spite of the recession, the weather, and the threat of nuclear annihilation, we made it. It's a new year and a clean slate. Not that the weather is noticing. In with the new year has come a new blast of cold air with temps this morning in the single digits. It won't get much warmer as partly sunny skies will warm us into the mid-teens, but that's it. And this weekend looks to be even chillier, starting tonight with lows in the single digits and sub-zero wind chills. So if you're going out and about, be sure to bundle up.
Do This For December 4-6
- Friday: The House of Glunz's annual champagne, sushi and caviar event takes place this evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sushi will be provided by Sai Café, Carolyn Collins Caviar. This event tends to sell out so call 312-642-3000 or visit the House of Glunz website to RSVP.
- LUSH Wine & Spirits' West Town location is now open at 1412 W. Chicago Ave.
- Saturday: If Anthony's photo essay of Toni Roberts's dessert plating didn't have you wanting to go to C-House, maybe their $25 High C Holiday brunch will. This prix fixe brunch menu includes your choice of two cocktails between "The Rudolph" (vodka or tequila, tomato juice, fresh horseradish, lemon juice and tobasco); "From the North" (a soothing mix of red wine, vodka, port, cloves, orange zest, accompanied with cinnamon sticks); "Winter Wonderland" (bourbon, heavy cream, egg whites, and nutmeg); "The Poinsettia" (sparkling wine, cointreau, and cranberry juice). All mimosas, bloody marys and sparkling wines are being sold for $5. (Affinia Chicago Hotel, 166 E. Superior, 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Reservations recommended).
Ingredient in Focus: Asparagus
We’re in the midst of Asparagus high times, but before you know it, the season will be over until next year. Stacks of the green stalks reaching 3 feet high (and selling for reasonable prices) will give way to anemic bunches sitting in water-filled trays at your local market. How should you take advantage of this bounty? By learning something about this first veggie of the season, that’s how!
Turkey Round-Up, 2008
One week from now we will be sitting at home, reflecting on the holiday while enjoying our favorite part of the holiday feast: the Thanksgiving Leftovers Sandwich. (Or at Best Buy purchasing ten plasma TVs, a washer and dryer, and thirty cameras for the Black Friday low, low price of $70.) But, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Until then, expect grocery stores to be annoyingly crowded for the Thanksgiving preparation home stretch with anxious hosts fighting over the last cranberries, turkeys, and autumnal gourd centerpieces. Lucky for you, we composed our annual list of places-other-than-Jewel to purchase fresh turkeys - it’s not too late to place an order, so give ‘em a call.
Turkey Roundup, 2007
Last year, perhaps a little earlier, we gave you a quick run-down of where you could buy yourself a turkey and at what cost. We felt that it would be nice of us to do that again for you ... not to mention the fact that we haven't had time to get a turkey for ourselves. So, without further ado, a decidedly skewed to the north side turkey roundup. Dominick's located at 6009 N Broadway...
