The corner of Dempster and Chicago in Evanston still retains some vestiges of its hippie past, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It actually reminds us of the less annoying parts of Lincoln and Wicker Parks. We've been fans of Bagel Art in Evanston for as long as we can remember; we usually have a sesame seed bagel with plain cream cheese every morning on the way to work. They also make a few good sandwiches for a quick bite during the work day, fuel for grinding out miles on the old Green Bay Road bike trail during summer, or just futzing around Evanston.

Too bad Brian Urlacher's monster game on Monday night came too late in the season for it to impact Pro Bowl voting by coaches and players. While he won the fans' vote, the Bears' middle linebacker was not selected to February's Pro Bowl for only the second time in his career — and the first in which he played the whole year.

Last week, that majority of football fans were unable to see what was perhaps the best NFC game of the year -- Chicagoist included. In the Thursday Night Football -- which airs on the NFL Network -- match-up of two one-loss teams, the Dallas Cowboys beat the Green Bay Packers 37-27. With the Bears playing in this week's Thursday Night prime time game however, the NFL Network's broadcasts will be carried locally. For those of...

Sure, we're all anxious and upset about the supposed cuts to the CTA service. However, there is one bus route we wouldn't mind see being cut. "We're a team that gets off the bus running the football,'' Bears coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday. ''I have it memorized, and that's what we are, period.'' Has he been watching the same offense we we've been watching this year? The only thing separating this team from a 1-6...

When Lovie Smith came to Chicago, he guaranteed victories over the Green Bay Packers. And four years into his tenure as Bears head coach, Lovie has lived up to his promise — at least at Lambeau Field. Sunday night, he took his 1-3 Bears into Green Bay to face the 4-0 Packers and came away with the 27-20 win. The Packers seemingly dominated the first half, racking up 341 yards of offense. Two key forced...

Things are not looking very good for the Bears. With Sunday's 37-27 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Bears showed their weaknesses on both sides of the ball. The first game of the Brian Griese era was no more successful than the Bears under Rex Grossman. Supposedly the safe game manager, Griese threw three interceptions — two while the Bears were in the "red zone." The other one was returned 64 yards for a touchdown....

Chalk this up to the "print what the Mayor thinks, not what he says" baseline established by Mayor Daley's father. Remember last month when the city celebrated the opening of the Riverwalk? Someone asked Mayor Daley if he'd eat fish caught from the Chicago River and he said, "Sure, why not?", which must've sent his press department scrambling for their phones, laptops and antacid to play it down as a half-joke. Sun-Times outdoor reporter Dale...

Why should billionaires have all the fun? Pretty much any sports fan has fantasized about how they'd run their favorite team if they owned it, and lots of people consider the Cubbies to be their favorite team. A number of them are using the Cubs' impending sale to try to get a piece of the team, even if they don't quite have a 10-figure bank account. Eric Majeski formed 4 Fans Sake, through which he...

The major stories this week are the opening of Crust, the continuing saga of David Hammond, bug eater, and how — if Hammond decides to head to Beverly in the near future — he might have a Tippi Hedren moment fighting with the seagulls who've been dining al fresco on cicadas. There are still plenty of events happening in the next seven days. Here are a few of note. - This weekend would be a...

It's Easter, y'all. That means, in addition to the re-enactment of the Passion happening as we write this in Pilsen, churches will be filled, families will gather, and restaurants will offer Easter Brunch specials. We have a few for you, in addition to the usual complement of food news and notable events. So sit back and unbuckle your belts. Who Comes Up With These Names, Anyway?: Leave it to us to be late to the...

Chicagoist has lost a lot of respect for Bears management this week. They talked a tough game, but when push came to shove they backed down. At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Bears GM Jerry Angelo announced that the Bears will suspend Tank Johnson for one game for "conduct detrimental to the team." ONE GAME!?!?! Talk about caving to the pressure to win at all costs. After serving his suspension, he'll be eligible to return...

Two local collegiate soccer programs clash on Wednesday night at University of Illinois at Chicago's Flames Field. The UIC Flames, ranked 10th in the nation, take on Northwestern University at Flames Field at 7:00 p.m. in a Great Lakes Region battle.

Several months ago, we interviewed Pete Schwaba about his film The Godfather of Green Bay. Unfortunately, we couldn't interview him until the night of the showing, so it was too late to pester all of you to go out and see the film. However, we found out that Godfather is returning to Chicago starting this weekend at select theaters. For those of you new to the party, Godfather is a feature-length comedy written, directed,...

Well, that sure looked easy! Opening up at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, the Bears made it perfectly clear who controls the NFC North this year, shutting out the Packers 26-0. This was the first time in Brett Favre's career that the Packers had been held scoreless. The Bears put together a complete effort, winning this game because of their offense, defense and special teams. Rex Grossman looked like a real QB, compiling a 98.6...

The Bears open their 2006 season on Sunday against the Packers up in Green Bay. What a way to kick the season off! While the Bears look to figure into the playoff picture, the Packers are focusing on the Brett Favre farewell (maybe) tour. The Bears should open with a key road victory against a division opponent, but in these big rivalries, one never knows. So just how good are the Bears this year? That's...

Chicagoist knows better than to read too much into the preseason games. The starters play only a couple of possessions and don't suit up at all if nursing even minor injuries. The guys getting the bulk of the plays are those just looking to make the roster. So we take whatever happens with more than a grain of salt. Nonetheless, we certainly do prefer to see the Bears win, even when it is meaningless. They...

The Emmys were last night, and if you cared, you watched. So the three of you that did can skip this post and move down the page to see what the other -ISTs wrote about last week. As for the rest of you who were catching up on episodes of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" during the big ol’ marathon this weekend, you can check out the Mo Ryan’s wrap-up here, complete with all the good...

The Bears played their third preseason game on Friday night and again did not look like a team expected to win the NFC North. And this was the game that the starters tended to play more of the game. Granted, some starteers continue to sit because of injuries, but the team needs to improve if they expect to match expectations for the regular season. While Lovie Smith again reiterated that Rex Grossman is the starting...

Anyone who's watched the Bears first two pre-season games knows who should be the Bears QB when they open their regular season against the Packers on Sep. 10th. And anyone who's read or listened to anything about the Bears also know who will be the starting QB in that game. And the answer isn't the same guy! In spite of two sub-par preseason outing by Rex Grossman, Lovie Smith stands firm that Rex is his...

Chicagoist is a baseball fan, first and foremost, but the "national passtime" now officially takes a back seat to football in the hearts and minds of most American sport fans. Especially the NFL. And for that, the NFL can thank the incredible leadership of Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue. Rozelle lead the league from 1960 until 1989, when the outgoing Taliabue took over. During their combined tenure, the league became the most successful pro sports...

The NFL released the 2006 schedule today, so we thought we'd take a first look at the Bears' 2006 schedule. The Bears open the season against their biggest rivals -- the Green Bay Packers. Will Brett Favre still be their QB then? He has yet to indicate whether he's returning or retiring. Either way, the Bears can expect a win their opening game because the Packers will be pretty bad. Is it really a Bears-Packers...

A few months back, A Chicago bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics was discussed. Chicagoist whole heartedly endorsed the idea. Da Mere also came out in favor of such a bid. It was pointed out, however, that the newly renovated Soldier Field wasn't large enough to accomodate the opening & closing ceremonies or track & field events. So, while we already have many of the necessary venues we'd have to build an Olympic Stadium in...

For the past couple weeks, most discussions about the Bears involved the question, "Orton or Grossman?" Who should be the QB now that Grossman was healthy? At what point would/should coach Lovie Smith make a change? Chicagoist was torn -- while we didn't like Orton's production and wondered whether he was a liability in terms of a playoff run, we also wondered whether Grossman would be any better given his rust and lack of experience...

Last Tuesday, Chicagoist went down to the Landmark Century Theater to check out the 2005 awards for the Midwest Independent Film Festival. (See our earlier interview with the founders.) The evening kicked off with a social that included a rock band made up of cats, free drinks, and a drawing for screenwriting software. Around seven thirty, everyone piled into the theater to watch the ceremony. Half the awards show was spent announcing the winners...

As many predicted, the Bears cut QB Chad Hutchinson yesterday, just days after naming Kyle Orton the new starting QB and dropping Hutchinson to 4th on the depth chart. Hutchinson signed with the Bears following Rex Grossman's season-ending knee injury. Slow to pick up Terry Shea's overly complex playbook, he didn't see action until Dec. 5th. That was the high point of his Bears career as he went 18-30 with 3 TD passes (115.0 rating)....

The NFL released its 2005 schedule yesterday, which of course means we learn the Bears' 2005 schedule. Once again, the Bears are denied any Monday Night games. Their only prime time game is their Dec. 18th Sunday night game against Atlanta that will be shown on ESPN. Date Opponent Time 9/11 at Washington Redskins 12:00 p.m. 9/18 Detroit Lions 12:00 p.m. 9/25 Cinncinati Bengals 12:00 p.m. 10/2 Bye   10/9 at Cleveland Browns 12:00 p.m....

Why were the Bears hiding this guy all that time? Signed following Rex Grossman's season-ending injury, Chad Hutchinson finally got a chance to play, and all he did was throw 3 TD passes in route to a 24-14 upset of the Minnesota Vikings. On Sunday, Hutchinson actually helped the Bears win the game, completing 18 of 30 passes for 213 yards and 3 TD's with no interceptions. By comparison, Craig Krenzel has only thrown 3...

Following Thursday's debacle in Dallas, the Bears signed veteran QB Jeff George to a 1-year contract. George, the first overall pick in the 1990 draft never lived up to the lofty expectations and developed a reputation for being difficult. Which may explain why he played for 5 teams in 12 years and has been out of the NFL since early in the 2001 season despite good skills. But he and his agent have been lobbying the Bears since Grossman got hurt, claiming he's found a new passion for the game and has adjusted his attitude. He must be desperate to get back into the league if he's even resorted to looking for teams on Match.com!
