We’ve been hearing for a while now that the CTA is due to receive federal stimulus money for transit projects. But we now have confirmation from U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the CTA will get $240 million in grants according to WBBM. The CTA plans to use the money to complete infrastructure repairs and acquire hybrid buses and has said that the federal money will help pay for roughly $7 billion of work needed to bring the system into good working order. CTA Buys 58 Hybrid Buses with Stimulus Money

The Chicago Transit Authority is about to embark on its second project funded by stimulus cash: it will purchase 58 hybrid buses for $49 million to be delivered this fall, according to a CTA statement.

No updates yet on that proposed mandate which would require Chicago cab companies to convert to hybrid cars, but it seems that a high number of Chicago and other Illinois residents are personally making the switch. While California strongly outpaces all other states for new hybrid vehicle registrations, statewide financial incentives and the price of gas are helping to keep both the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois in the top five on lists for new hybrid sales.

Hybrid grapes, with regard to winemaking, are often ignored or ridiculed by the wine "experts." Sometimes this is with good reason; a mere mention of the word "chardonel" transports us back to Sundays at the Magic Pan.

The CTA is running a test hybrid bus on the #8 Halsted line. The funky-looking, futuristic (can you imagine, the future arriving to the CTA?) bus confused some riders who questioned whether or not they were stepping on to public transit.

Could Chicago cabs be going hybrid? Finance Committee Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th) and Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen (38th) are proposing a city mandate requiring cab companies to begin incorporating hybrids into their fleet of vehicles, with a complete conversion of all Chicago cabs by January 1, 2014:
