Stacy Peterson's October 2007 disappearance gets more publicity, thanks in large part to the churlishness of her estranged husband Drew. But today marks five years since Lisa Ruttenberg Stebic went missing, and there are no signs of a break in that case.
The Lisa Stebic Case, Five Years Later
Still No ID on Found Body
There was no luck with an autopsy on the remains of a woman found Wednesday night in the Des Plaines river. Instead, DNA samples will now be sent off for testing to help ID the woman and the Will County Coroner says it could take up to two weeks for results. Meanwhile, residents await word to see if the body could be that of either of the area's two well-known missing women, Lisa Stebic or Stacy Peterson. A spokeswoman for Stacy's family told the Tribune, "We've been down this road before. Regrettably, it could be any woman at this point, and that's something I think we should all pay attention to."
Extra, Extra
- Plainfield police have announced new developments in the Lisa Stebic case, and while they're not doling out any details, they are saying that they "shed additional light on what happened to Lisa." Stebic disappeared nearly 2 years ago.
- The Cook County Sheriff's Office is continuing their strong stand to fight prostitution -- besides suing Craigslist, they've also brought in counselors to help women quit the business and get off the streets.
- A bar in Peoria really, really wants people to know THEY ARE NOT A GAY BAR!! The gay community in the city is outraged, and have "vowed to never go back to the bar." We don't think they thought that one all the way through.
Stebics Sue CBS for "Reckless" Behavior
We're surprised it took this long. Craig Stebic's sister, Jill Webb, and her husband Robert Webb have announced that they filed a lawsuit against CBS2 along with station president Joe Ahern, news director Carol Fowler, and reporters Rob Johnson, Mike Puccinelli, Michele Weldon and Alita Guillen for their role in Bikinigate 2007. At issue is a video that CBS aired showing NBC reporter Amy Jacobson in a bikini at Craig Stebic's home; Jacobson says she was merely trying to get closer to his family to dig for more information into the story about Stebic's still missing wife, Lisa. The video subsequently led to Jacobson's dismissal (The Jake filed her own lawsuit against CBS in July.)

Here's what our local ne'erdowells have been up to while waiting in eager anticipation for tonight's Oscars:
Found Woman Not the Missing Women We've Been Looking For
It’s official now, the frozen woman found yesterday is not the body of Lisa Stebic or Stacy Peterson. The identity of the woman has not been released, but those two have been eliminated as possible victims.
Stebic, Peterson Updates
Things were jumping at the Will County Court House. Lisa Stebic's children testified in front of a grand jury yesterday about their mother's disappearance six months ago. Craig Stebic, Lisa's estranged husband and person of interest in the case, hasn't allowed the police to interview his kids, even though they're two of the last people to see her. Lisa's family says they wanted the kids to be interviewed at a child advocacy center instead,...
Missing Women ...
Is it just us, or does it seem like there's been a huge increase in the number of missing persons stories? This can't all be the Sun-Times' doing, right? A Chicago Heights woman has been missing since Sunday afternoon. Alma Mendez went jogging in the forest preserve in South Chicago Heights and hasn't been heard from since. The Southtown says Mendez is 5 foot 4, but the Trib says she's 4 foot 11. If you've...

Modest hero saves toddler and brushes off praise after locating boy, and putting his own air mask on him. The family of a missing Plainfield woman hopes two billboards to be unveiled Tuesday in that community, asking "Where is Lisa Stebic?" will help generate new tips. Somebody's lovin' it. McDonald's turns some heads by sponsoring a music tour featuring Chicago's Twista, a rapper whose raunchy lyrics have been identified by a billboard campaign decrying...
The Final Amy Jacobson Post This Week, Unless Something Else Develops
It looks as thought the Amy Jacobson story continues to have legs (this might be the first in a series of unintentional puns, so bear with us). First, the Plainfield police department finally announced yesterday that they're considering Craig Stebic as a "person of interest", and not just because he throws a memorable pool party. It turns out that Stebic has refused requests by police to take a polygraph test and to let the cops...
From Covering the News to Becoming the News
Just one day after the first shoe dropped, the other has fallen with a resounding thud. NBC 5’s Amy Jacobson was canned from her reporting job last night after video surfaced of her visiting Craig Stebic, husband of missing Plainfield woman Lisa Stebic, and wearing a bikini with her two young children in tow. Jacobson, a self-described aggressive reporter who worked for NBC for 11 years, told the Sun-Times that she’s “devastated” and that she’d...
Separated at Birth: Brenda Starr and NBC 5's Amy Jacobson?
NBC 5 reporter Amy Jacobson (pictured, right, with NBC 5 weekend anchor Anna Davlantes), who's been covering the story of missing Plainfield woman Lisa Stebic, was caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place over the weekend. Video footage surfaced of Jacobson in a bikini at the home of Craig Stebic, Lisa's estranged husband, on her day off. Before we go any further, kudos to the headline writer at the Tribune for not stooping...

He had to promise them one of his lovely TIFs, but Daley did manage to convince mapmakers Navteq to stay in Chicago rather than relocating back to the Silicon Valley in California.
