As if there hasn't been enough for Mike North to deal with this year, yesterday it was announced that his show "Monsters of the Morning" will be ending its run on CSN on December 31. CSN and Licorice LTD, owned by North and his wife, decided not to renew the show's contract for 2010, leaving the show without a home. CSN president Jim Corno called it "an economic decision," and North said, "I'm excited about the future...There are other opportunities for us to explore." [Crain's]

She married ChicagoSportsWebio founder David Hernandez in 2001, but she is just now finding out who he really was. Last week, the SEC accused Hernandez of running an $11 million ponzi scheme that funded the ChicagoSportsWebio venture, and he promptly left town. Gina Hernandez reported her husband missing on June 16, and police found him at a hotel downstate on June 22.
It's been a strange couple of days for ChicagoSportsWebio and it all culminated with the site shutting down yesterday, according to the Trib's Phil Rosenthal. While the site still looks like it's fully operational, indeed, there is no audio. The drama started when Mike North's complaints about bounced checks got him fired from the site by co-founder David Hernandez. Hernandez was then alleged to have been running a Ponzi scheme and subsequently disappeared, his wife yesterday filing a missing person's report.
With radio in turmoil and big name hosts getting axed across town, radio personalities are sometimes going to unusual lengths to reach an audience. After leaving The Score (670AM) last year, veteran sports radio host Mike North joined forces with David Hernandez to launch Chicagosportswebio.com as an internet sports-talk platform. Things started to get weird there last week, when it was reported that North was fired from his executive role at the start-up by Hernandez after North question why the media outlet's checks were bouncing.
Sometimes, we're puzzled by the extremes that the mainstream media will go to create news or controversy in an attempt to boost readership. We know that journalism's practice of these tactics go way back -- Hearst ignited a war to sell papers -- but to waste time with something as stupid as pondering whether Chicago needs another NFL team? Come on! And yet that's what we get from the Sun-Times today, as they have Mike North and Dan Jiggets face off on the issue.
Mike North's ChicagoSportsWebio.com is preparing to become a 12 hour sports talk station. The station will include boxer Ray 'Boom Boom" Mancini, Chet Coppock, Jonathan Hood, Teddy Greenstein and Tim Doyle.
There's an empty bar stool at the "afternoon saloon." ESPN Radio WMVP (1000 AM) escorted Dan McNeil, host of the afternoon "Mac, Jurko and Harry Show," out the door on Friday and breaking up the team that's been handling afternoons for nearly eight years. The station decided not to pick up the option on his contract, and while he's under contract until May he's been pulled off the air.
When Mike North wasn't on air on Monday, it seemed like the typical negotiating ploy that stations use against on-air talent as contract renewals approach. Instead North found out on yesterday, via e-mail, that The Score (670AM) rescinded their last offer and he's finished with the station after 16 years.
Trends do fluctuate, and nearly every WSCR show was down in April. Still, this would be like Konerko trying to negotiate an extension after hitting below .200 in September.Continue reading "Mike North May Leave WSCR"
Fans can expect another busy offseason for the Cubs. And while last winter was spent courting the likes of Alfonso Soriano and Ted Lilly, this year's focus is going to be the ownership of the team. The Tribune Co., the current owners, has been dragging its feet on the sale, as it tries to maximize the overall price. While officially the desire is to close the sale during the fourth quarter, it's likely a deal...
It's been confirmed. Orlando Jones, John Stroger's godson who avoided being interviewed by the FBI in conjunction with a hosptial shakedown in Las Vegas, committed suicide on a Michigan beach. Not only is this a tragedy for the people involved, but we're really disappointed with the Jesuits, as well -- The Rev. Donald McGuire has been convicted of molesting two boys in Wisconsin, faces a new accusation of sexual abuse, and his Jesuit religious...
This week, the Cubs announced plans to build a statue of Ernie Banks outside Wrigley Field, honoring Mr. Cub himself. The new statue will be in place before the 2008 season. While discussions about erecting a statue honoring perhaps the greatest Cubs player ever had been going on for a while, Jess Jackson recently got the ball rolling with a public petition, appearances on the Mike North morning show, and a publicized meetings with Tribune...
Any weekend that has the Cubs and White Sox playing each other is exciting, but since the Sox added A.J. Pierzynski to the mix he seems to have developed an uncanny ability to fan the flames even more. Remember his little run-in with Cubs catcher Michael Barrett last year? A.J. didn't disappoint this year, either, causing fireworks at the beginning and end of the weekend, both on the field and off. On Friday, during Mike...
Whenever we pick up on a story about “cost-cutting” we always pause to ponder the ultimate usefulness of most cost-cutting strategies, namely, slicing off a thin sliver of fat at the bottom rather than the thick fat at the top. So it’s bemusing to read in the Trib that NBC 5 is slicing, dicing and shuffling its news programming in an effort to slim down. Changes include Michael Sneed’s snarky celeb gossip (discontinued), WSCR-AM 670...
Let's say you come from a family that enjoys good conversation while sharing a bottle of wine on the holidays. Or maybe you come from a family where you need a stiff shot of Glenrothes in order to get through the unwrapping of presents. But you live in Chicago, both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fall on a Sunday this year, and you can't buy liquor until 11 a.m. Let's take solace in...
A few weeks ago, we noted that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban expressed an interest in buying the Cubs. But he's not the only billionaire who could imagine himself in the owner's box at Wrigley. Donald Trump would also be interested! The brash real estate tycoon and reality show star said that he'd like to own the team. When asked by Mike North on 670 the Score, the Donald responded, "I would be interested, yeah....
No, not to another city! The Sox are moving south on your AM dial next year, having reached an agreement to move their game broadcasts to The Score 670 (WSCR) from their current home at ESPN 1000 (WMVP). The 5-year deal will pay the White Sox only $2.5 - $2.7 million per season, about half what they get in their current deal. Chicagoist isn't sure why they didn't wait until after winning the World Series...
On Thursday, the local Arbitron radio ratings came out, and they signaled a major shift in Chicago's sports radio market. The incumbent WSCR 670 AM was passed by relative newcomer WMVP 1000 AM. Personally, Chicaogist isn't surprised. We try to listen to both, but usually find our radio turned to ESPN 1000. WMPV is owned by ESPN, which dominates the cable TV and online sports markets, and benefits from both the cross-marketing and stable of...
