AT&T this week unearthed some of Jim Henson's earliest films, made for the company for a business seminar in Chicago in 1963.
The Friday Flashback: Jim Henson's Early Short Films
Sesame Street Tackles Childhood Hunger
Tonight on PBS stations across the nation Sesame Street and the Children's Television Workshop present a primetime special, Growing Hope Against Hunger. The special tackles the problems of food insecurity and childhood hunger in America. Sesame Street will put their own stamp on the fight by introducing a new Muppet character named Lily, a child who goes to school hungry whose family deals with food insecurity.
Labor Day Diversion: Ween + Muppets = FTW!/WTF?
There's a cottage industry on the interwebz with taking songs and setting them to Sesame Street and Muppets clips.
Tuesday Morning Diversion: OK Go + Muppets?! Yes
Is this, like, the neutron bomb of viral music videos?
Friday Afternoon Diversion
You have probably already seen this since it's the equivalent of Internet napalm (LCD Soundsystem + Muppets = CAN NOT LOSE) but we reckon it's our civic duty to ensure every single one of you have seen this.
Muppets Laugh it up on Top Chef
Anyone who didn't watch Top Chef last night should watch this video immediately. Anyone who did? Relive the memories. The Top Chef gang was joined by some of the Muppets from Sesame Street, who judged a cookie making challenge. Cookie Monster (who spent much of his time trying to eat the tablecloth) Elmo and Telly joked, snarked and eventually judged. The contestants look like they can't decide whether to be thrilled to meet childhood heroes or appalled that their cuisine is being judged by hand puppets. As one of our tweeps remarked, after about ten seconds, we might've put Elmo under the salamander. We kid!
I'm A Mother-Muppet Monster
Kanye West's video for "Monster" leaked out over the break, and it's cool and all, but you haven't lived until you've seen the Muppet-ized version! We reccomend you throw on some headphones if you're gonna crank this at work.
The Muppets Have a Cooking Show!
If you're like us, that headline alone will make you excited. We don't often shill for the Disney Studios, but anything Muppet-related makes us giddy with glee. Muppets and food together? Our happiness cannot be contained. The Muppets Kitchen with Cat Cora will make for a very amusing couple of hours at your computer.
Monday Afternoon Diversion: Sesame Street Parodies the Old Spice Guy
If anyone else besides the Muppets were to make an Old Spice Guy commercial just as that meme was about to fade into obscurity, we'd probably snark about striking while the iron is hot. But this parody featuring Grover is pretty damn cute.
Muppets Take Museum! (Of Science & Industry)
Allow your inner child a moment to rejoice - the Muppets and other creations from the mind of Jim Henson are coming to the Museum of Science and Industry. "Jim Henson's Fantastic World" opens at the MSI this Friday and runs through the end of January. The exhibit brings puppets, props, illustrations, experimental films, and hands-on puppet shows and character creation for the kids in case they're freaked out by the inanimate dangling Kermits.
Humpday Afternoon Diversion II: OK Go Vs. Animal?
Ira Glass, OK Go, and Muppets. Drummer versus drummer! Yup.
Humpday Morning Diversion: Muppets + John Denver
Before the Muppets did "Bohemian Rhapsody," they joined up with country/folk force of nature John Denver for this twist on a classic.
Weekend Diversion: More Muppets
If the rise of the viral video means we get more Muppets in our life, than it's worth all the other crap that makes it out there. Behold, three Muppets and a Christmas carol.
Tuesday Afternoon Diversion: Muppets Do Queen
Yesterday, we watched a Yip Yips-Busta Rhymes mash-up. Today? We watch this glorious piece of genius, the Muppets covering Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Sorry, Wayne and Garth, this one's better. [via]
It Ain't Easy Being Bird
Oh, Andrew Bird. We've made no secret in the past about our crush on you. And now you've given us another reason to add to the adoration. In an interview with the BBC, [via Pitchfork], Bird says he's recorded a cover of of Kermit The Frog's classic tune, "It's Not Easy Bein' Green." It's part of a tribute record to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street and the 'Fork reports it'll also feature Weezer and My Morning Jacket.
Thursday Lunchtime Diversion: Muppets + Funk = Heaven
This is the most glorious video we've seen all week and it definitely puts us in the mood for the upcoming holiday weekend. It's also further evidence that Jim Henson was either even more of a genius than we ever thought or that he was totally tripping out of his mind during the 70s. Some of those Muppets are WEIRD, man.
Humpday Diversion
The Muppets hit Detroit and team up with The Electric Six. Mayhem ensues.
Extra, Extra
- The number of city jobs to be cut if the unions don't come to an agreement with Mayor Daley: 431 according to the Mayor.
- Authorities arrested Elgin Nathan James for running "a street gang that allegedly exerts control over the hardcore punk rock music [scene] through the use of violence."
- A strange story from the South Side where a man's two prosthetic legs were stolen. The legs were later recovered unharmed.
Friday Afternoon Diversion
This item is of great interest primarily because at the 50 second mark it prominently features the group computer we all share to write our Chicagoist posts in the home office.
Hump Day Diversion: Muppet Mash-up
The Great Muppet Caper + Oceans Eleven = everything right about mash-ups. [TMSIDK via The Daily What]
Monday Afternoon Diversion: The Muppets Run Into Trouble
Sure, SNL took on Blagojevich again, but we much prefer this pretty funny Muppets skit to the tired Blago imitation. Come on, Sudeikis, you can do better!
Thursday Afternoon Diversion: Ode To Joy, Muppet Style
Yes, it's the Thursday afternoon before a Holiday break. Why do you ask?
Jim Henson Retrospective Coming to Siskel
Just when we thought the Siskel Film Center had reached its maximum level of awesome, they've pretty much blown our minds by announcing a month-long Jim Henson retrospective. It runs from November 8 through December 4. It features all the highlights you'd expect (including The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth) as well as a bunch of stuff you won't see anywhere else.
Humpday Afternoon Diversion: It's Muppet Time
Between their duet with Feist and this catchy little ditty, we'd say the Muppets are well on the road to updating their sound.
