Naperville Lawyer Claims Adidas Ripped Off Slogan

Naperville attorney W. Brand Bobosky is claiming that he came up with "We Not Me" a recent ad campaign used by Adidas. Bobosky is suing the sportswear company for using his copyrighted slogan in their campaign. The multimillion-dollar advertisements featured NBA star Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics. Bobosky told the Chicago Sun Times that he tried to negotiate a licensing agreement with Adidas after their advertising campaign launched. "They stonewalled me for 11 months" he said.

14-year-old Michelle Fahle who attended Naperville North High School and died yesterday had H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu, according to the DuPage County Health Department. However, she apparently also had an undisclosed "underlying condition" that could have also contributed to her death. No precautionary measures have been taken at the high school yet, as it was closed today for parent-teacher conferences and will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. If Fahle's death is attributed to swine flu it will be the first H1N1 death in DuPage county and the 20th in Illinois. [CBN]

Naperville To Homeless Guy: Scram!

Naperville, home to 7-figure historic houses, Ribfest, and 2 Targets is a suburbanite wet dream. Which is probably why their city council doesn't want homeless people cluttering up their spiffy downtown. They recently passed an ordinance 6 votes to 1 "banning sleeping, camping and storing personal property" anywhere on their downtown streets. The Naperville city attorney says they enacted this measure to "protect the economic vitality" of the area.

Well, not everywhere, but close. It wasn't too long ago we mentioned the rabid bats over in McHenry County. Today comes word of the discovery of a rabid bat in over in Will County, more specifically Naperville. The bat was discovered hanging under a trampoline this weekend but since then officials say it was first seen almost a week ago and are looking into whether or not anyone came in contact with the bat. It's Will County's fourth rabid bat since May 1. [WBBM]

Naperville's Homeless Protester

The Tribune profiles Scott M. Huber, a well-known homeless man who has set up a "protest site" in downtown Naperville. While the profile lists a few of Huber's run-ins with the law and even a bit about Huber's run for Mayor of Naperville, Huber is never clear exactly what it is he's protesting. And Huber is now making waves because his site is growing with personal possessions and may be becoming a public nuisance. Huber tells the Trib's Gerry Smith, "I'm not the classic homeless person, sleeping on a park bench or underneath a bridge and wandering aimlessly through a community. I am here by choice under the 1st Amendment -- freedom of protest." As for the city of Naperville, Smith reports, "City Manager Doug Krieger said city staffers are looking into the "gray areas" of Huber's protest site, like whether his tarp constitutes a structure and thus violates city code." It's an interesting read, to the say the least. Check out the full profile here and check out pics of Huber - as mentioned in the story - here.

Police are investigating the deaths of two beloved pets in Naperville as poisonings. They are offering $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrests of any culprits. Max, a 9-year-old black Labrador retriever, died late last month from what veterinarians said was an intestinal infection. Bosco, a 8-year-old chocolate Labrador who lived just around the corner from Max, also died after suffering from similar symptoms: vomiting and diarrhea. Veterinarians who looked at Bosco determined he had consumed rat poisoning. The close proximity between the two pets led the Naperville Police Department and animal control to determine whether or not the poisoning was deliberate. Though it was not determined if Max had also ingested rat poisoning, his owner, Gwyn Fahrner, believes it is possible. However Fahrner doesn’t assume it purposely done. [Trib]

Officials in Naperville are breathing a sigh of relief that one pyro-oriented kid didn't do more damage or seriously bodily harm to anyone after setting fire to a church while 50 congregants were inside. The fire was set by a juvenile Sunday morning at Naperville Congregational Church while the congregants hung about after the morning's worship service; the fire seems to have been set from the pulpit while the congregants were in the basement. Calling it, "an apparent arson involving a juvenile," Naperville police Cmdr. Dave Hoffman wouldn't reveal details about the suspect other than that he or she was a member of the church. No one was injured by the fire - which was immediately put out - and the church sustained about $500 in damages. Police are calling it "aggravated arson." [Sun-Times]

A suburban school bus driver from the First Student bus service has found himself out of a job after he kicked a 13-year-old girl off his bus miles from school because she didn't have express permission to be on it. The student, Claribeth De La Cruz, had stayed overnight at a family friend's house as her parents attended to an emergency involving her older brother, who suffers from a serious illness. Her mother thought she had taken care of things by leaving a message for Claribeth's teacher, as well as sending a note along with her daughter explaining the situation and giving the girl permission for the change. But unfortunately that wasn't enough.

By a vote of 33-23, the Illinois State Senate approved a bill that would give schools more control over how to handle students with criminal records. The bill would allow schools to place such students in alternative schools. State Sen. Randy Hultgren, the bill's sponsor, said, "They realize that it is something that school districts aren't going to use lightly, because it is serious. But a forcible felony is serious, too." The impetus for the case is an incident at a Naperville Unit District 204 school where two boys allegedly sexually assaulted a third. When the victims' parents asked that the alleged attackers - who have been charged with felony criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault - be moved to a different school, the school said it was out of their control. While this bill moves onto the state House, a similar bill, introduced State Rep. Darlene Senger, has already been introduced to the House but is under review. [Daily Herald]

A 12-year-old Naperville boy who had gone missing, along with his family's SUV, was found this morning unharmed at O'Hare Airport. Earlier reports of the boy reported on the boy's tendency to sleepwalk but officials say that played no role in this incident and that the boy drove away under "his own free will." Police considered his disappearance a runaway situation. Police were able to find the SUV's tracks in the snow and follow them. Said Police Commander Dave Hoffman, "The tracks were all over the place. It was pretty apparent it was an inexperienced driver."

It's a bit of driving around but after perusing the photo gallery (Hello, George Costanza-worthy Weilert Custom Homes bathroom, above) it might be worth devoting an entire day navigating around the suburbs. But if you're like us, you'll probably just get tired and end up hanging out at the refreshment stop, snacking on catered food and raspberry watermelon lemonade from the Viking Cooking School and Culinary Shop instead.

Naperville is getting a special off-year census because the Census Bureau thinks there might have been significant population growth in the area. Only certain neighborhoods (Naperhoods?) will be surveyed, and answering questions should only take a few minutes. And now, the reason we're posting this story: This 2000 SNL clip! Yay! I can't think about the census without thinking about this sketch. Today's video day around here, so what the hay, let's keep it going.
