Sunday Liquor Sale Curbs Are Falling By The Wayside
Last month, Downers Grove joined a nationwide trend when they passed a measure allowing Sunday liquor sales to begin at 9 a.m. instead of noon--a change that local restaurants and hotels wanted to cash in on Bears games. Since 2002, 14 other states have dropped their liquor-related Blue Laws and allowed Sunday sales of alcohol, bringing the total number of states to 36, says Lisa Hawkins of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. "Blue Laws simply don't make sense in today's economy. They inconvenience consumers and deprive states of much-needed tax revenue," she said to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Westboro Baptist Church to Protest in Naperville
The memories from the Westboro Baptist Church protest at the University of Chicago last spring are still fresh in our minds. Dog Poop Spurs Strange Retaliation From Neighbor
No one likes stepping in dog poop. Whenever we do, many of us dog owners ourselves, we swear and scrape and stew about the irresponsible nature of others. But Susan Miller, 43, of Naperville, had an unusual reaction when she stepped in dog droppings left by her neighbor's pet on Wednesday night. According to police, Miller collected the excrement and threw it into her neighbor's sliding patio screen. She then filled several plastic bags with dog feces and hung them "on various places on the patio," police told the Chicago Sun-Times. She also stole a sign--which asked apartment complex resident to pick up dog waste--and put it on her neighbor's property. Miller was charged with disorderly conduct.

Duckon 19: Lightning And Klingons And Geeks, Oh My
Hundreds of people turned out over the weekend for the 19th annual Duckon, one of the area's more unique sci-fi conventions. Due to the sheer amount of fantastic programming, we weren’t able to catch everything (we’re particularly sad we missed the Klingon People’s Court), but we saw as much as we could. There was something for every kind of geek available, from an entire track of Klingon Programming (including wedding vow renewal) to panels on how media and technology affect our culture as a whole. Geeks of both sexes were able to learn tips and tricks on how to get dates while fans of pretty much every sub genre of sci-fi could find a movie or television show marathon to watch. The conference included both a large open air market of books, clothes, toys and even weapons and a spectacular art auction.

Billy Williams and velociraptors aren't the only statues in the news. This weekend, Naperville will dedicate a nine-foot tall statue of cartoon crime fighter Dick Tracy, the newest addition to the town's riverwalk along the DuPage River. But why will a 2,000 pound bronze statue of Dick hover over the townspeople? Because a man who's been an integral part of the comic strip over the last 50 years lives in Naperville. According to the Tribune:

Bobosky told the Chicago Sun Times that he tried to negotiate a licensing agreement with Adidas after their advertising campaign launched. "They stonewalled me for 11 months" he said.
Naperville Teen's Death Possibly From Swine Flu
14-year-old Michelle Fahle who attended Naperville North High School and died yesterday had H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu, according to the DuPage County Health Department. However, she apparently also had an undisclosed "underlying condition" that could have also contributed to her death. No precautionary measures have been taken at the high school yet, as it was closed today for parent-teacher conferences and will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. If Fahle's death is attributed to swine flu it will be the first H1N1 death in DuPage county and the 20th in Illinois. [CBN]
Naperville To Homeless Guy: Scram!
Naperville, home to 7-figure historic houses, Ribfest, and 2 Targets is a suburbanite wet dream. Which is probably why their city council doesn't want homeless people cluttering up their spiffy downtown. They recently passed an ordinance 6 votes to 1 "banning sleeping, camping and storing personal property" anywhere on their downtown streets. The Naperville city attorney says they enacted this measure to "protect the economic vitality" of the area.

Naperville's Homeless Protester
The Tribune profiles Scott M. Huber, a well-known homeless man who has set up a "protest site" in downtown Naperville. While the profile lists a few of Huber's run-ins with the law and even a bit about Huber's run for Mayor of Naperville, Huber is never clear exactly what it is he's protesting. And Huber is now making waves because his site is growing with personal possessions and may be becoming a public nuisance. Huber tells the Trib's Gerry Smith, "I'm not the classic homeless person, sleeping on a park bench or underneath a bridge and wandering aimlessly through a community. I am here by choice under the 1st Amendment -- freedom of protest." As for the city of Naperville, Smith reports, "City Manager Doug Krieger said city staffers are looking into the "gray areas" of Huber's protest site, like whether his tarp constitutes a structure and thus violates city code." It's an interesting read, to the say the least. Check out the full profile here and check out pics of Huber - as mentioned in the story - here.
Police Investigate Possible Poisoning of Two Naperville Pets
Police are investigating the deaths of two beloved pets in Naperville as poisonings. They are offering $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrests of any culprits. Max, a 9-year-old black Labrador retriever, died late last month from what veterinarians said was an intestinal infection. Bosco, a 8-year-old chocolate Labrador who lived just around the corner from Max, also died after suffering from similar symptoms: vomiting and diarrhea. Veterinarians who looked at Bosco determined he had consumed rat poisoning. The close proximity between the two pets led the Naperville Police Department and animal control to determine whether or not the poisoning was deliberate. Though it was not determined if Max had also ingested rat poisoning, his owner, Gwyn Fahrner, believes it is possible. However Fahrner doesn’t assume it purposely done. [Trib]
