Loved It, Hated It: Uptown Pie Company
Two of your favorite Chicagoist foodies, Minna and Caitlin, teamed up to try the new Uptown Pie Company, an addition to Wilson Yard's Cupcake Gallery. Baker/owner Darius Williams also added an expanded seating area to the existing space. Minna loved it. Caitlin hated it. Find out why, grab a slice, and let us know what side you fall on.
Serving up Hope at Blue Sky Bakery
"More than learning how to bake, I want our youth to learn how to have a job," says Lisa Thompson, founder of Blue Sky Bakery. As Mayor Daley noted on Wednesday night, Chicago's chefs are wonderful citizens of the city. But rarely do we encounter an organization so perfectly positioned at the intersection of "serving great food" and "helping the world" as Thompson's Blue Sky Bakery. Blue Sky trains homeless and at-risk youth to become bakers, helps them learn to hold down a job, pays them a good wage and supports their education. The youth staff the bakery's retail establishment, work at farmers markets and get a real connection to the products that they create - and often go on to brighter futures.
Lust for Crust! Part 2: Tips From the Pros
The Chicagoist kitchen has been bustling around the clock as we put together apple pies of all kinds in preparation for this Sunday’s Bucktown Apple Pie Contest. We’ve tested out everything from the correct apple variety to crust add-ins and the result has turned our taste-testing staffers into a veritable round table of gluttons (thanks guys!).
Sugarkist Cakes and Pies
Sugarkist Cakes and Pies, the heavenly creations of Chicago pastry chef Jane Roberts. Sugarkist is a special order bakery specializing in seasonal fruit pies and wedding cakes. Sugarkist seeks out local dairy, eggs, and fruit from farms selling at the Green City Market, frequently Klug Farm and Nichols Farm. In addition to special order home delivery, Sugarkist sells mini pies - the perfect dessert for two - at Green Grocer, Provenance Food and Wine, and New Wave Café. With pies like the mystical (for real) Pear Cranberry Hazelnut Crumble, or the divine Chocolate Bourbon Pecan, Sugarkist is not to be missed. Although Jane’s menu changes seasonally, she’s always open to special requests. Today we asked Jane to tell us a little about herself and her mouth-watering desserts.
Do This!: Blue Sky Bakery and Café's Seasonal Pie Tasting
We've written about Blue Sky Inn (including an interview with Executive Director Lisa Thompson) before. The bakery and cafe they run in Albany Park (4749 N. Albany, 773-478-2233) is part of the non-profit organization's mission to provide job training to at-risk youth. It's also a great-looking storefront.
Monday Afternoon Diversion: Obama Pie Edition
Just when we thought our Monday Blues were going to fully consume us, this popped up in some of our inboxes. Courtesy of Chris Barrett comes this video of Obama appearing last week in West Philadelphia and talking a lot about pie. Pie is the new "change."
