New (Temporary) President At U of I
The trustees at the University of Illinois have selected a new president for the school. Current President B. Joseph White will remain in place until the end of the year when Stanley Ikenberry will return to the school to take over the position. Ikenberry previously served as president of the university from 1979 until 1995; he will fulfill the position only temporarily until a permanent replacement can be found. [CBS 2]
Davis Enters Cook County Board President Fray
The challengers are starting to line up to take on embattled Cook County Board President Todd Stroger in next year's election. With Stroger already seeking reelection and others like Toni Preckwinkle announcing their intention of challenging Stroger, it'll be a crowded field. At a speech yesterday announcing the kickoff of his petition drive for a place on the ballot, Davis said, “You can't operate an enterprise on a patronage system. You cannot operate an enterprise because it does not belong to you, it belongs to the people." [FOX 32]
White Sox Plan Special Edition Obama Caps
The White Sox may never be able to surpass the Cubs as most popular team in town, but having our new Commander in Chief as a fan has certainly given the Sox some new found cache. Since Barack Obama's election as president, sales of Sox caps have surged 25 percent. So it comes as little surprise that the South Siders are playing up their new status as First Team. The Sox have already launched a First Fan page on their website.
Northwestern Names New President
Northwestern University has announced Morton Owen Schapiro will become the school's 16th president on September 1, 2009. Board of Trustees Chairman Patrick Ryan said in a statement, "We are delighted that President Schapiro has accepted our offer to become Northwestern's next president and we look forward to his arrival on campus next fall." Schapiro, currently the president of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, will take over for Henry Bienen, who has been president for 14 years.
